Andras (Andy) Kovary
March 5, 1937 – February 1, 2026
Surrounded by love, Andy died peacefully at the Toronto General Hospital in the Cardiac ICU.
Born in Tarcal, Hungary, Andy immigrated to Canada in 1957 at the age of 20. While completing his schooling in mechanical engineering he fled the Hungarian Revolution. Taken in by the Montreal Catholic Church, he began his new life with just the $5 provided by the church. Working in a vegetable field, he was quickly identified as someone who could easily fix the farming equipment with his mechanical knowledge. This spurred a long and successful career, working for International Harvester where his work took him to Northern Canada, working on the Distance Early Warning (DEW) Line. While working for Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Andy completed several post-secondary education programs in aeronautical engines and computer programming, supporting his progression from front line labour roles to management positions over his 31-year career. He worked at OPG’s Hearn and Lake View Generating Stations.
He met his wife in Toronto in the early 1960’s at a coffee house in Yorkville and throughout their 59-year marriage travelled to many countries and enjoyed learning about and experiencing new cultures.
Throughout his life, Andy was known for his incredibly quick and dry sense of humour, love of family, passion for cars, European football (especially his home team TFC), and enjoying drinks with friends and family. His interest in current events and politics provided him lots of content for friendly banter and debates. Andy’s ability to fix anything earned him the nickname “Handy Andy” by many neighbours and friends. He renovated the family home in the Scarborough Bluffs and his two daughters’ homes and cottage with amazing knowledge and know-how.
Andy was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle and friend to many. He is survived by his wife Germaine, his daughters Giselle and Andrea, son-in-law Jeff and granddaughters Sydney and Jacqueline, his sister Marika and her two daughters plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by baby son Derek, who died only a few weeks after birth.
Those who knew him will remember Andy for always cracking jokes, his optimism, and his easy-going nature. His presence brought calm, lightheartedness, kindness and comfort. He was steady, patient, quick-witted and very loving to his large extended family. His legacy lives on through his lessons of hard work, resilience, fairness, generosity to friends and family, and not sweating the small stuff!
The family would like to thank the very compassionate and caring team at the Toronto General Hospital Cardiac ICU for their support.
A loving and light-hearted Celebration of Life will be held on Friday February 27th at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre https://www.charleshbest.com/donate
