Alys Maude Powe
(nee Brady)
April 20, 1927 - March 30, 2015
Alys passed away peacefully on Monday March 30th in Toronto, at the age of 87, following complications from surgery. Alys leaves behind her husband, Bruce Allen, of 65 years, daughter Kathleen, son Bruce William (Auxi Sanchez Ledesma), grandchildren Jeremy Earley, Kate and Tom Powe. Predeceased by son -in-law Paul Earley. She will be missed by sister Sheila Schlesinger (Ernie) of Edmonton, Alberta.
Dear aunt to Dan (Geraldine), Nancy (Brad) and Joel (Colleen). Also missed by Joe Schlesinger (Judith Levene) Toronto, Ann (Dave) and Leah Schlesinger.
Alys was born in Camrose Alberta in 1927 and moved to Edmonton in 1941 . She graduated from the University of Alberta and became an elementary school teacher. Bruce and Alys met while attending university, waiting for the bus on the same street they lived on. They were married in 1949 and shortly after moved to Ottawa. She was one of the first married women allowed to work in the Federal Government in the 1950’s. Alys was a gifted musician obtaining her ATCL degree in piano from the Trinity School in London. Sadly, arthritis took its toll and she lost the ability to play many years ago. She loved to travel, take courses, attend a good party, listen to music and read. She had an acute interest in politics and did much volunteering for political campaigns and the United Appeal. She had a sharp wit, a quick receptive mind and a warm heart. She would open her home to many who were far from home, in need of a home cooked meal or a place to stay.
The last few years have not been kind to Alys as her mind and body deteriorated. She had been a resident at the Wellesley Central Rekai Centre for the past three years.
A private family service has been held. Please join us for a celebration of Alys’ life on Saturday May 2nd at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd (east gate entrance), Toronto. Visitation 12:00- 1:00pm, service and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society, Toronto, would be appreciated. Online condolences at www.etouch.ca.
To revise Dylan Thomas, “It was time for her to go gentle into that good night”.
