Alexander Maropakis
October 13, 1938 - July 11, 2015
At age 76, passed away on Saturday, July 11th, 2015 at Toronto East General Hospital after a courageous battle with leukemia.
He was the beloved husband of Anna Marie, dear brother to Miguel, proud father of Georgia (who passed away May 5, 1994), Mano (Tammy), Edward (Mary) and Peter (Karri) and doting grandfather to Alex, Nicholas, Samantha and Jamie.
Alex was born in Kalithea, Greece to Georgia and Emmanouel Maropakis. He immigrated to Canada in 1955 where he met Anna Marie at a dance in Toronto. They were married in 1960 and after 55 years of marriage they still loved to dance together.
In keeping with his loyal character, Alex spent the bulk of his career - over 30 years - at the Scarborough Board of Education where he created and operated the Repair Department. He was a genius with all things mechanical and was the go-to man for any electronics anyone needed repaired, improved or invented. He made many friends at the board and eventually retired in 2000 to devote more time to friends, travel, family and in particular his grandkids.
Alex was a big presence with an enormous heart. He lived to love his family and expressed himself with kind words, supportive actions, generous deeds and a never-ending supply of wonderful food.
Visitation and funeral details below. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alex's life or contribute to this online memorial by signing the virtual Guestbook.
Donations may be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation or Toronto East General Hospital.
