Albert (Burt) G. Palmer
December 26, 1927 - September 22, 2012
Albert (Burt) George Palmer, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 22, 2012 in the Palliative Care Unit at The Scarborough Hospital. Burt was born December 26, 1927 to Sidney and Winifred Palmer in Toronto, Ontario and was the youngest of 3 children. He attended Earl Haig Public School as a child and continued his education at Danforth Technical School where he studied Drafting. Although he met his beautiful wife Susan Ellen Elliot, in grade 3 of Public School, it wasn't until years later that they became a couple and eventually married in 1949 in Toronto.
Burt pursued various careers as a youth including such jobs as car salesman and door to door vacuum salesman, eventually landing in the field of Cartography. Over the years, he honed his skill as a Draftsman creating various types of topographical maps by his ever so skillful and steady hand, however, he was still not content with this career path. During the 80's, Burt decided to leave his profession to pursue another line of work and enrolled in Ryerson University's Real Estate Course. At middle age, with a home, wife, and three children, this was an extremely brave move. With his nose to the grindstone, as he attacked many obstacles, Burt was successful in gaining his Real Estate License and began what would prove to be his career of choice. Over the years his clientèle grew and often he found himself serving repeat clients. As the housing market thrived, so did Burt. He had found his niche in life and many people whom he dealt with in his profession enjoyed dealing with him. One of his clients called him "Easy Money" due to the seamless and uncomplicated manner in which Burt would go about selling their home.
Burt's biggest passion in life was sports. Whether it be hockey, baseball, football, or soccer, if it had a team he was watching. This could be the reason for his drive to give back to the sports community by involving himself for well over 50 years in the Wexford Hockey Association in a number of roles as well as a Director in the Scarborough Hockey Association. As a young father, he was coach to his 3 sons in both hockey and baseball for numerous years.
Burt semi-retired in his late 60's and still kept his hand in Real Estate while enjoying his favourite pastime, working on projects at the cottage in Fenelon Falls. Eventually he fully retired and along with his wife Susan, began spending the summers at the cottage, enjoying lakeside life and often entertaining guests. We now affectionately call it "Palmer North". During the winter months, Burt would spend most of his time watching one of his favourite sports, hockey. He also continued to Coach his three sons on their adult hockey team and was instrumental in them achieving several championships.
Burt is survived by his wife, Susan; sons Steven, David and Michael; grandchildren, Ryan, Nicholas, Samantha and Zachary; sister, Phylis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burt was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Evelyn Hoyle.
Also, many thanks to the staff at The Scarborough Hospital (formerly know as Scarborough General). Over the past 10 years, Burt has succumbed to many illnesses, had numerous procedures, and subsequently spent a great deal of time there. The many Doctors, Nurses, and staff always took very good care of Burt as well as Susan and were comforting at multiple critical times througout the years. The Palmer family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.
