Passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on May 11, 2026, at the age of 44. Al was a loving son to his father David Hruska and stepmother Cheryl Petherick, and to his mother Marlene Anderson and her husband Bob Davis. He was a big brother to Jill Anderson Ayotte and April Anderson, and brother-in-law to Christa Hruska, Curt Ayotte, and Dylan Verschaeve. He was an uncle to Nathan and Ryan Hruska, Connor and Kira Ayotte, and Anders Verschaeve. Fondly remembered by many aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as Step-grandfather Bill Petherick. Predeceased by his brother Lee, his Nanny and Papa (Grace and Bill Sneddon), his Grandmother (May Hruska), and his Step-grandmother (Gladys Petherick).
From an early age, Al displayed a wonderful sense of humour and enjoyed a hearty laugh. He loved playing many different games, but his favourites included ball and ice hockey, ping pong, and cards of any sort. He was particularly fond of cribbage and kept statistics of his wins and losses against his opponents. Al was also an enthusiastic fan who enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, especially his beloved Maple Leafs.
Al was an incredibly social person who could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved spending time with family and friends whether making and sharing an artery-busting breakfast or freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, camping, visiting the family cottage, or heading out on a road trip. He had a kind and loving heart and was a friend to many.
Al was especially passionate about music. He was a member of the percussion section of the Anderson CVI concert and jazz bands and played the drums in several amateur rock bands for many years both during and after high school. If not performing music, he was listening and dancing to it whether at home, a concert, or social gathering.
Underneath the fun and games, the socializing, and the music, Al struggled for years with mental health and addiction issues. He often found the world a dark and difficult place in which to exist. Sadly, some of his methods for dealing with his pain were damaging and destructive. We find comfort knowing he is finally at peace and no longer suffering.
We are proud that Al was a registered organ donor and helped save the lives of three different individuals. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to Lakeridge Health Foundation - Mental Health & Addictions, and/or registration as an organ donor.
