In memory of
Aija Zommers
April 29, 1942 - July 28, 2026
Aija (Vilums) Zommers passed away peacefully at Scarborough General Hospital on July 28, 2026. A lifelong debater, she met her cancer diagnosis with determined cross-examination, questioning her doctors with characteristic precision and exposing flaws in Ontario’s health-care system.
Born April 29, 1942, in Riga, Latvia, Aija was forced to flee her homeland at age two with her mother, two sisters and great aunt. Her earliest memories included soldiers storming into a shelter where her family was hiding in Poland, and her mother gleaning grains from fields to feed her children.
Aija was reunited with her father at Camp Ohmstede, a British-run displaced persons camp in Germany. There, Aija read books about the British monarchy, sparking a lifelong interest in the Royal Family despite her deeply egalitarian beliefs. She also remembered using chewing gum from care packages to seal the gaps between the wooden planks in her barrack.
In 1950, the family settled in Owosso, Michigan. Even as a child, Aija relished spirited debate, arguing with neighbourhood children over whether God lived in the Lutheran or Catholic church. Having lost her home and much of her childhood to war, she developed a devotion to something that could never be taken away: ideas.
After earning a BA in History from Wheaton College in Massachusetts and starting a career as a teacher in Milwaukee, Aija married her soulmate, Uldis Zommers, in 1973 and moved to Canada. Teaching history at Branksome Hall, she was a passionate advocate for girls’ education. For over 40 years she dedicated herself to public speaking and debating, becoming head coach at Branksome Hall and the University of Toronto Schools. She challenged students to think critically and to communicate with clarity. Her teams rose to top ranks in Canada and globally, and she received her own accolades such as the 2017 UTS Heartwood Award for Volunteer Service.
Aija was an active member of the St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Latvian congregation and a supporter of her homeland Latvia and the Latvian culture and language. Uldis and Aija choose an unusual honeymoon destination – the USSR – travelling back to Riga to visit relatives at a time when few dared to return. For many years Aija taught in the Toronto Latvian heritage school “Valodina”, leading her students in “Baltic Way” freedom marches at Nathan Phillips Square in 1989.
At home Aija expressed her artistic talents: drawing, weaving, painting intricate Easter eggs, working through the night to sew Halloween costumes for her daughter and granddaughter. She would do anything to support and help her daughter, Zinta, including caring for Zinta’s Great Dane for two years. The dog would jump on her bed, and with no way to move an animal that large, Aija had to learn to share the pillow with a snoring dog. After her husband’s death in 2021, Aija devoted herself to her granddaughter, her "#1", listening to her practice cello each evening over video calls.
Aija will be deeply missed by her daughter, Zinta (Malte Kirchner), and her granddaughter, Klara. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews—Andra and Paulis Zommers, Mara Ward and Andrew Tudor and their families—as well as by cousins Zane Jansons and Andre Ezers and their families, and by relatives in Latvia.
Aija’s life was shaped by extraordinary resilience, a lifelong passion for learning, and a belief that ideas matter. She challenged assumptions, inspired students to find their voices, and never shied away from a spirited argument. She will be remembered as a devoted teacher and mentor, mother, grandmother, and champion of thoughtful debate. A Celebration of Life will be held Oct 17 at 3 pm at St. Andrews Latvian Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Likteņdārzs in Latvia or to Latviešu Fonds.
