It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) James McGinley on Friday, March 14 at his home in Leaside, surrounded by his loved ones. Bill was a beloved husband, dad, and friend, known for his unwavering advocacy, generosity, and passion for helping others.
Predeceased by his devoted mother, Kathleen (Kay) Margaret Donnelly, Bill is survived by his loving wife, Kim McGinley (nee Campbell), and his four children from his marriage to Thames McGinley: Kaeleigh McGinley (Curtis LaBute), Alleigh McGinley, Rowyn McGinley (Drew Blair), and Ryleigh McGinley.
Born in Toronto’s Lawrence Park neighbourhood, where he attended Lawrence Park Collegiate, Bill exemplified the fighting Irish and tackled every challenge life threw at him with determination, humor, and an unshakable spirit.
Bill was a devoted and loving dad, always putting his children first. Humble, accepting, and fiercely loyal, he ensured they always knew they were supported and loved. His incredible work ethic was driven by his desire to give his children a better life. Bill passed down his love of a good celebration, his legendary sweet tooth, and his deep appreciation for family. He was an expert lunch packer, a master of tying hockey skates, and the ultimate Canada’s Wonderland dad.
His two loves of family and hard work led him to be a relentless dreamer, imagining the various business endeavours he and his four children might get up to together. The longest-running plan was the family gas station: the truly awesome show the McGinley’s would have run together. Bill’s larger than life spirit will live on in his kids forever.
Bill will be dearly missed by his work family at Carpedia International, where he found some of the most fulfilling years of his career as a management consultant. A proud alumnus of York University, Bill acquired broad industry expertise, traveling the world and being ‘all in’ for every company he worked with. He was a keen observer who could cut through complexity to help businesses implement the operational and cultural changes that would help them to become stronger and more efficient. As he grew in his career, he never lost sight of his role as a mentor to younger colleagues. His no-nonsense approach, coupled with his sharp wit and deep well of wisdom, left an enduring mark on everyone he worked with.
After believing he had put cancer behind him in 2010, Bill bravely faced its recurrence when he was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer in 2018. He soon became a tireless advocate for colorectal cancer awareness and early detection, working closely with the Colorectal Cancer Resource & Action Network (CCRAN), where he served as the chair of the organization's Patient Advisory Council. Through his advocacy, Bill was a constant source of strength and inspiration for those in the cancer community, embodying a never-give-up attitude that encouraged countless others facing similar battles to greater resilience.
Over the course of his prolonged cancer battle, Bill forged lasting relationships with his care team at Princess Margaret Hospital. They became like an extended family to him. Despite the immense challenges he faced, his gratitude for the care he received never wavered. His care team knew him not only for his resilience but also for his humor, kindness, and unshakable determination.
