Wan Shing Tong, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully and suddenly at Markham Stouffville Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife and family. It is with great sadness that we share the news of his passing. He was 91 years old.
Born on Oct 17th,1934 in Hong Kong, Wan Shing met and married his wife, Hung Yip, in 1963 after 3 years of dating. Together, they built a life in Hong Kong and welcomed four children, one son and three daughters.
In 1978, driven by the hope of giving his children a better life and education, Wan Shing and his wife made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada with only $200 in his pocket. With the sponsorship of his wife’s sister family, they settled in Courtenay, BC, where he began learning to cook while working in a Chinese restaurant under the guidance of his beloved brother in-law.
After a year and a half, seeking job opportunities, he moved the family to Regina, Saskatchewan. Adjusting to life in Canada was not easy for him or his wife, especially with limited English, but they pushed through every challenge and raised four wonderful children with resilience and love.
In 1989, after many years working in Chinese kitchens, Wan Shing fulfilled a dream by opening a small Chinese take out restaurant. Running the business with minimal help was incredibly demanding, it was hard work, but as always, he and his wife persevered. In 1995, they decided to retire and moved to Toronto, where three of their children had settled after finishing high school.
Wan Shing and his wife enjoyed 30 years of retirement together, filled with joyful memories, family gatherings, and time spent with their beloved grandchildren. He remained energetic and active for most of his life, until a health scare in the summer of 2024. This slowed him down and limited the time he could spend in the kitchen preparing his special dishes, something he had always loved to do.
Our dad raised us the best way he knew how, with kindness, courage, sacrifice, resilience, perseverance, humor, and a love he expressed through actions more than words. He gave us safety, values, and the foundation of who we became. Everything good in us came from the way he lived his life. This is how we will remember him, and how we will cherish him for the rest of our days.
Wan Shing is survived by his loving wife of 62 years; his four children – James(his wife Michelle), Rebecca(her husband Allan), May (her husband Kim), and his youngest daughter Mandy(partner Joe). His four grandchildren: Nash, Makena, Amanda, and Johnathan.
While the family deeply appreciates your warm thoughts, prayers, and support during this time of sorrow, they kindly request that no condolence visits be made. A private service will be held at the family’s request.
