It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wai Wu (胡緯), who left us peacefully on September 28, 2026, at 12:48 a.m. at the age of 89.
Born in Hong Kong, China, on March 6, 1937, Wai was the cherished sixth child of the late Sze-Hong Wu (胡仕康) and Kwai-Fong Yip (葉桂芳). Growing up alongside five older sisters and one younger brother, Wai was deeply loved, well protected, and treasured by his parents and siblings throughout his childhood.
Wai dedicated his life to education and scholarship. He graduated from Chung Chi College (崇基學院) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, earning both his Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Literature and a Diploma in Education. He began his career teaching at CCC Kei Chi Secondary School (中華基督教會基智中學), where his dedication eventually led to his appointment as Vice Principal. Driven by a lifelong passion for learning, he pursued further studies at the University of Macau, focusing on literary criticism and earning a Master of Arts degree. He later studied Chinese linguistics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic (now Hong Kong Polytechnic University), earning a second Master of Arts degree. Before his retirement in 1994, he taught at both Hong Kong Baptist University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong sharing his vast knowledge with students and fellow faculty members.
Wai was the beloved husband of Wing-Shu Wong (黄詠絮), with whom he shared 41 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life rooted in mutual devotion, companionship, and an enduring trust in God.
In 1995, Wai and his wife immigrated to Toronto, Canada. Freed from academic schedules, he pivoted his immense intellect toward his faith and personal passions. He focused heavily on writing and went on to publish several books, most of which explored different interpretive approaches to studying the Bible. He combined his love for Chinese philosophy and literature, computers, and theological research into these written works.
Upon settling in Ontario, Wai and his wife became devoted members of the Markham Christian Community Church. They deeply treasured the rich fellowship, genuine love, and unwavering spiritual support they received from the church's brothers and sisters over the decades.
He is survived and deeply missed by his wife, Wing-Shu Wong, two older sisters, Wan-Yue Wu (胡藴如), Ging-Yee Wu (胡靜宜) and his younger brother, Jack Wu (胡績). He also leaves behind a legacy of love as a proud and caring uncle to his nieces and nephew, Joan, Kenneth, and Teresa. His memory will live on eternally in the hearts of his extended family, friends, church community, and the many students whose lives he touched across continents.
Wai, may you rest in God's eternal peace.
