Voula Stamatakos – loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many – passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to her family and friends. A proud and feisty Greek woman, Voula’s stubbornness was matched only by her boundless generosity and the intense love she showed to everyone around her.
Voula was born on April 11, 1933, in Asopos, Lakonias. She moved to Canada in her mid-20s where she married the love of her life. A talented seamstress and fiber artist, Voula crafter countless dresses, sweater, winter tops, blankets, Greek authentic outfits, coats etc. for her family and friends, pouring love, care and creativity into every stitch. She was a traditional cook, but her Spanakopita with home made filo was second to none, and her home-made bread was more than perfect – it beat the top baker in the world! On top of this, she had the greenest thumb I have ever seen, reflected in her lush garden filled with colors of the rainbow, which felt like walking into a tropical paradise! She raised her son John and daughter Yiota with unwavering love and embraced her grandchildren Stavroula, Marina, Dionysis, and Marios with warmth and joy. Her home was filled with laughter, kindness and the comforting presence of her love.
Voula was remarkably giving. She often baked bread and packed bottles of Greek Oil to share with poor, neighbours and even the maintenance crew in her building in her husband’s memory or simply out of kindness. Friends and family will fondly remember her radiant smile, her unstoppable energy and her insistence on doing everything herself – her way – but always with love alongside her sometimes playful, teasing, stubborn and occasionally rough and dry sense of humor that could light up a room or simply drive one crazy!
She leaves behind her son John (Christine) and their children Stavroula (Mike), Marina (Jacob), her daughter Yiota (Jimmy) and her children Dionyssios (Fahmida), Marios (Eleni).
Voula will now be joyfully reunited with her beloved husband, our father, grandfather and friend, Anastasios (Tassos) Stamatakos, (Jan 12, 1931 – April 5, 2004) as well as all the family members and friends who passed before her.
Voula’s life was one of dedication, feistiness, generosity, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
