Visvaldis Ozols passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on October 27th.
Visvaldis was born in Dobele, Latvia. In 1944 at the age of 13 along with his parents and siblings he had to leave Latvia, eventually settling in Argentina. There he completed his secondary school studies, enrolling in the University of Agronomy and starting his own family. In 1976 along with his wife Ita and four teenage children he moved to Canada, settling in Toronto. While making a living for the family, he immersed himself in woodwork artistry based on his deep seeded roots for Latvian traditions and art. All four children attended higher education and started their own families - blessing Visvaldis and Ita with 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Visvaldis sang in Latvian choirs Daina and Daugavas Vanagi. He was also a member and chair of the Latvian artisans group. He participated in many Latvian Song Festival art exhibitions and he was actively involved in the Latvian community life over many years.
His carpentry and woodworking skills were passed down from his father. His unique style grew from his Latvian upbringing, utilizing his own techniques and creativity, alongside with his artistic and beloved wife Ita of almost 70 years. They were a creative team with boundless energy and imagination. Visvaldis was predeceased by his wife six months ago.
His works were displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, USA and Argentina. He became a member of many Latvian based museums travelling to Latvia for pleasure and cultural immersion over the years. Both Visvaldis and Ita were keen world travellers, visiting many places including Brazil, Europe, Japan, Egypt and Australia.
In recognition of his wood sculpting, he was the recipient of an honorary master craftsman diploma issued in Latvia, as well as numerous top awards at artwork shows in Canada and USA. Many of his works were donated to decorate museums in Latvia, and others are displayed at the Toronto Latvian Center. Visvaldis also created outdoor wood sculptural elements and tended to his extensive garden.
His work ethic and passions were constants in his life and never dwindled, always actively thinking about the next project. These personal traits are treasures handed down to his doting family.
Visvaldis will always be in our hearts.
