Tien Po Mak, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of his family and community, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto. Known to his family as “Ba,” he will be remembered for the life he built, the family he cherished, and the quiet strength with which he lived.
He was born on April 28, 1935, in Heshan, Guangdong Province, China. In 1939 his family moved to Hong Kong, where he would later meet his wife Man Wah “Lisa” Mak. Together, they built a life grounded in integrity, resilience, and family. In 1973, he immigrated to Canada with his wife and their seven children, embracing a new country with courage, determination and laying the foundation for generations to come.
A proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren, Ba found his greatest joy in time spent with family. He cherished the family’s monthly gatherings, where hours were happily spent around the dim sum table - laughing, sharing stories, and simply being together. These moments reflected what mattered most to him: light humour, warm companionship, and a good dan tat 蛋挞.
He was also known for his simple daily pleasures, especially his afternoon coffee outings, and for his impeccable personal style. Faith was a central part of his life. He was a devoted member of Toronto Chinese Mennonite Church where his presence, generosity, and steady example left a lasting impression. His commitment to the church and its community was a reflection of the values he lived by every day.
Apart from the jobs he worked and the hobbies he had, Ba’s personal qualities were even more noteworthy. Anyone who knew him, even casually, would remember him as polished but never too serious; strong but never overbearing; generous, loving, with a great sense of humour. He lived with dignity, inspiring his family through his hard work and character.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Man Wah “Lisa” Mak; his seven children, Earnest, Wendell (Susan), the late Grace (the late Richard), Victor (Esther), Christine (Ben), Norman (Linda), and David (Hang); his eleven grandchildren, Jordan, Jeremy (Victoria), Emily, Kaitlin, Daniel, Priscilla, Connor, Jovian, Adam, Chloe, and Atticus; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. Thank you for everything, Ba/Grandpa.
A Celebration of Life will be held for immediate family only.
