It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Susette Doris Coverley (née McKane) on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at the age of 95. Born on October 22, 1930 to Edith and Albert McKane, Susette, or Sue, was a beloved mother, daughter, wife, and friend. She led a long life in good health until her last few years when she was affected by Parkinson’s. Throughout her journey of 95 years, she touched many lives and was known amongst her family for her love of the gab. She enjoyed countless nights with her husband, friends, children, grandchildren and also her beloved mother Edie at home or at the cottage playing cards and chatting until the wee hours of the morning.
Susette grew up in East York, on Prust Avenue, with her parents and grandparents - her namesake Susette (née Moscini) and Francois Van der Hoeven - who brought the family from London, England to Canada after WW1. She met her future husband Kenneth Coverley, in high school and were sweethearts ever after. After marrying, the two moved to Scarborough where she raised her three children, Dianne, Cheryl and Wayne, in the Wexford area. She remained in her home after Ken passed, 69 years in total, until last year when she moved in with her daughter, Cheryl. A favored family gathering spot, Susette loved her home and stayed as long as possible, but loved her daughter’s cooking and companionship in her last year. Her visits with her son and all her grandchildren were so appreciated and gave her many moments to cherish as well.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband Ken, her Aunts Ethel and Doris and Uncle Frank; her son-in-law Stephen; her cousin Dorothy (Dot) who she maintained correspondence with throughout her life; and her good friend and cousin David McKane, who was like a brother to her, both only children brought up close to each other. In her final days, she enjoyed looking at one of David’s paintings which brought her great comfort.
Susette is remembered by her children and their families: Dianne; Cheryl (Stephen Mooney†) and her children, Crystal Harrop (Steve), Ryan Mooney (Jessica) and Julia Hayhow (Scott); and Wayne and his children with Mary Coverley, Claire Wattie (David), Catherine Leffler (Daniel), Michael Coverley (Cory), Annie Coverley (Ken Roesch). In addition, her many great-grandchildren have fond memories of time spent with Great- Grandma Sue in her later years: Hannah, Sasha and Charlie Harrop, Jack and Samantha Mooney, Lincoln Leffler, Silas and Westley Hayhow.
Many family events were held at Sue’s home in Scarborough and at her mother’s cottage on the shores of Pigeon Lake in the Kawarthas. The swimming pool she maintained for many years was a favourite gathering spot for her children and grandchildren, where they would often have lunch or dinner by the pool. Likewise at the cottage near Elim Lodge, many summer afternoons were spent either on or near the water, but her grandchildren also dutifully picked up sticks from the numerous trees on the property after avoiding it as long as possible. They had walks down the lane with Grandma for many years after dinner at the cottage and also enjoyed rides with Grandma Sue (and Great-Grandma McKane) back and forth from the cottage, which usually involved either a stop at a chip truck or the eagerly anticipated Kirby Burgers.
In her early days, Sue and Ken were known for their parties and their love of gatherings with friends. Later, when he took up golfing, Sue loved her time as a “golf widow” baking and homemaking. She was known for her lemon squares as well as her coffee cake. Her grandchildren, on the other hand, always looked forward to her sausage rolls and never failed to finish the tray. Sue made her own bread for many years and being a Depression era baby, was known for her love of saving the milk bags much to the amusement of her grandchildren. Many family gatherings at her house included watching the Santa Claus parade together or listening to Christmas music and was a fond memory of the holidays. Early on, she enjoyed trips to Virginia and Myrtle Beach with her husband. In her later years, on a trip to the East coast with her daughter and granddaughters, Sue was teased for her astonishment at the beauty of the Hopewell Rocks, saying “Oh, to think my eyes would see this sight”. Sue was a steady, calm presence in the lives of her family and a caregiver, who nursed her husband through a battle with lung cancer and later cared for her mother in her home for many years. She enjoyed swimming, outings with her good friend Betty and chatting with her favourite next door neighbours. It is also of note that John (Ramsden), a close family friend, would check in on Sue in her later years and was also present during the bedside vigil in her last days.
Her family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the fantastic nursing staff on the 8th floor of Centenary Hospital for their kindness, gentle care and compassion in Sue’s final days on palliative care, especially to Jizelle and KC. Many thanks also to Sue’s guardian angel Sonya whose gentle presence brought her comfort in her time of need.
