Sam was born in Zamboanga, Philippines. He was the son of Reverend Ching Cheung and Yan Tsang Hoh. In 1968, Reverend Hoh came to Toronto to serve as Pastor for the downtown Chinese Gospel Church. At the age of ten, together with his parents, his two sisters (Esther & Lydia) and his brother (Timothy), Sam began his Canadian journey.
In 1984, Sam earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of Waterloo. After a few years working for Hakim Optical, Sam set up his own practice in Mississauga. Together with his dedicated staff of two, the team provided excellent services to hundreds of patients until he retired in 2022.
Sam earned a doctoral degree in Theology in 1995 and was an ordained pastor with Evangelical Association. He cared deeply about vision health especially for those who do not have ready access to care. He joined the non-profit organization Orbis and visited Jamaica several times to provide eye screening and examinations and used these opportunities to spread the gospel.
Sam had a great passion for Porsche sports cars, loved to eat (especially lobsters), read and swam regularly. He enjoyed many trips with his family to US, Asia, Europe and the Caribbeans. Many happy family meals were shared during milestones and celebrations. While Sam was shy, he had a knack for making his parents, and nieces and nephews break out in laughter. Sam had a special gift of a very strong and detailed memory so when we cannot remember, we would always say “Ask Uncle Sam”.
In 2009, Sam met his wife Tanny. Together they made many fond memories and good friends through their mutual interest in cars. Many exciting driving and racing trips were enjoyed with friends such as the luxury Porsche Travel Experience in British Columbia in the summer of 2022.
Sam passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be very missed by his wife, his family, his nephews (Derek and Thomas) and nieces (Caroline and Sarah) and friends.
