Roy Taylor was born on February 12 1948 in Paget Bermuda to Roy and Angela Taylor. He has three Brothers, Lloyd, Charles and Mark. Roy lived in St. Georges. Roy grew up by the water and as you can imagine, he spent all his free time by the water, in the water and on the water. From the age of nine or ten, Roy had learned how to sail. When he was 11 his Father gave him a boat. By 12 he was sailing on his own in the Harbour. A life jacket sitting beside him. He would go out any free time he had. The Summers were spent in that boat. He would pack a lunch, peanut butter and jam sandwich and a bottle of pop, and away he would go. He would be out all day and return before it got dark. At 12 he had many experiences on the water, assisting adults who were stranded and out of gas in their boat. On one occasion he towed a boat with a family back to shore, It took about one and a half hours. His boat was often decorated for the Easter Parade.
Roy attended the Bermuda Technical College and later came to Toronto where he attended Radio Collage. He was employed for a short time and in 1970 he started his own Business. Taylor Electronic Designs manufacturing Audio Visual Equipment used for 35 mm slide presentations in schools and businesses. Over the fifty years in business, Roy manufactured Mining Survey Instruments, Exhibits for the Science Centre, Daylight running modules for the Automotive industry, and other electronic equipment. From 2012 Roy began offering courses in electronics which were held in his facility. This continued until 2020 when Covid forced him to discontinue.
In 1974 he met Helen at the Embassy Tavern in Toronto on St. Patrick’s Day. Helen and Roy have been married for 50 years. They live in Toronto in the Weston area. They have had cats all thru these years. The most recent Cats – Tiger, Tuppence and Chance all came in their back door. Roy also collected AFX Slot cars and antique model trains . A room in the house is packed with Train Memorabilia. He attended many Toy and Train shows and would come home with a large box. Special purchases . Then there was Ebay and the bidding on trains. Sometimes it was down to a few seconds when he would put his final bid in …and most of the time win. He ran his trains regularly. He enjoyed showing others his collection.
Roy started his Health Journey in August 2020, in the middle of Covid. He has had five years travelling this route of good times and not so good times. He enjoyed almost everyday and was thankful to be able to do so. He worked on the roof, cleared gutters with Helen holding the ladder, kept the grass cut and most of all enjoyed sitting on the front porch speaking to everyone who passed by the house. Even the Squirrels came daily to see him. They miss him and keep hoping he will be there. He continued to offer his knowledge to many adult students who would come to the house. His patient teaching method allowed these students to work on hobbies or increase their knowledge in their work. We thank the Staff of Humber River Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital for their continued care during these five years. In May 2025 Roy was able to end his last Radiation by taking the mallet and hitting the Gong, followed by a short speech about how much he appreciated the care at Princess Margaret.
Roy leaves behind his Wife Helen and Brothers Lloyd, Charles, Mark and Family in the United States and Bermuda.
