Passed away peacefully on (January 8th, 2026). He was the youngest son of the late Richard Thorman (Lewis) and Mary Edna (McMillan) and related to deceased half sister Nellie Pearce, half brothers George and Richard Kinsey and nephew to predeceased Ralph Johnston and Millicent Irene (McMillan), Perce Rogers and Lillian (McMillan), Marjory (McMillan), Alex McMillan and Annie McMillan
He was Comptroller of Finance for The Metropolitan Toronto School Board from 1958 to 1980. His legacy included the first Uniform Code of Accounts for local school boards which was immediately made a requirement for all school boards in Ontario, and centralized tendering for insurance. From 1981 to 1986 he was Vice President and Comptroller of the Canadian Operations of The Prudential Insurance Company of America. Then he proceeded to subdivide his farm in Vandorf, Ontario into Vanvalley Estates for custom homes. He operated his farm in Queensville from 1973 to 1994,
He had a B.Comm (1952) from the University of Toronto and was a life member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. He was a life member of the Toronto Musicians Association and the Canadian Authors Association and a professional member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto. His philanthropic projects include scholarships at the Faculty of Music and Victoria University at the University of Toronto, an Endowment Fund at the Royal Ontario Museum for the acquisition of Canadian artifacts and a Fund for The Canadian War Museum to purchase and restore tanks and motorized vehicles. In 2012, as a 2LT in the Royal Canadian Artillery he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for "dedicated service to your peers, to your community and to Canada". In June 2014 he was presented with The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Bronze Level award for generous philanthropy to The Royal Ontario Museum during the celebration of its Centennial of 100 years of nurturing discovery and inspiring wonder. On November, 10, 2014, the Canadian War Museum in recognition of his philanthropy unveiled a plaque entitled The Richard Iorweth Thorman Vehicle Restoration Workshop, outside the workshop.
He always felt that his life had been enriched greatly by his immediate family including Ruth Marie Boyle, daughter of Marjory (McMillan) who passed away when Ruth was a baby to be loved and raised by Richard Thorman and Mary Edna Thorman, his extended family, and his friends and business colleagues. His humor and love of life will be missed. Family and friends will be received at YORK FUNERAL CENTRE, 160 Beecroft Road, North York (416-221-3404) on (January, 24th, 2026) with a visitation between 1-2pm and service at 2 p.m. followed with refreshments. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Children's Wish Foundation would be appreciated. He will be cremated at St. James cemetery, 635 Parliament Street, Toronto, Ontario and his ashes interred in the family plot therein.
