Tenacious and full of character to the end, Paolo passed away peacefully on January 25th at the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence with his family at his bedside. He was a fighter, but one ready to find peace after almost 98 years of life lived with a strong sense of obligation and love for his large extended family and friends. Paolo was predeceased by his beautiful wife Caterina, and leaves behind his daughters Palma (John), Josie (Aucke), Maria (Tom, who sadly predeceased him by a month), and Diana (Bill); his grandchildren Alessandra, Natasha (Taran), Rebecca (Avi), Robert, Jessica, Trina (Mitch), Tommy, and Sophia; and his great-grandchildren Aarna, Felix, Leela, and Griffin.

Born in Sant´Onofrio, Calabria, Italy, Paolo immigrated to Toronto in 1951, bravely joining other young male relatives and paesani in starting new lives in a very foreign world. Despite facing language barriers and cultural differences, Paolo, a master mason with great determination, soon started his own masonry contracting business. He included his brothers and close family members in the business and employed other family and friends from the old hometown. Paolo generously helped others from Sant´Onofrio immigrate to Toronto and get their start in their new country.

After many years of hard work, Paolo retired and surprised us all with new creative talents, painting and sculpting many pieces that were by turns fascinating, otherworldly, colourful, playful, nostalgic, and even satirical. Despite being offered money several times, he always refused to sell any of his pieces, only ever giving them away as gifts. His artwork adorns his home of 60 years and the homes of a few delighted, lucky family members and friends.

He found a new zeal for life in his retirement years, not only through his flourishing creative pursuits, but through his many new special friendships at the West Hill Social Activity Club. He delighted in time spent with friends participating in cultural activities, celebrating special events, and playing bocce ball - displaying his many team championship trophies prominently throughout his home alongside his artwork. He also shared a special bond with his long-time close friends and neighbours and was especially grateful for their support throughout his later years.

A traditional man who never lifted a finger in the kitchen, he had no choice but to step up when Caterina became ill and later passed. And step up he did! Relishing the learning of new things, he began cooking his favourite meals at the youthful age of 90, even learning which grocery stores had the best deals and happily spending time watching Italian cooking shows. At age 85, Paolo was still up to reshingling his garage roof; and he also continued to do his own home and garden maintenance right up to age 95, climbing 3m ladders to prune trees and clean eavestroughs. As if all that weren’t enough, he also picked up a new hobby in the form of reading, devouring a variety of books in both Italian and English, including his favourites, Dante’s Trilogy.

Paolo was very grateful to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit and of the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence for the exceptional care they provided him and their friendly and engaging interactions. Our family extends its sincerest thanks to the staff for their dedicated efforts in making Paolo feel comfortable during his stay there.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Providence Healthcare Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Tenace e pieno di carattere fino alla fine, Paolo si è spento serenamente il 25 gennaio presso le Case della Provvidenza Cardinal Ambrozic, con la famiglia al suo capezzale. Era un combattente, ma pronto a trovare la pace dopo quasi 98 anni di vita vissuti con un forte senso del dovere e amore per la sua numerosa famiglia allargata e gli amici. Paolo è stato preceduto nella morte dalla splendida moglie Caterina e lascia le figlie Palma (John), Josie (Aucke), Maria (Tom, che purtroppo lo ha preceduto di un mese) e Diana (Bill); i nipoti Alessandra, Natasha (Taran), Rebecca (Avi), Robert, Jessica, Trina (Mitch), Tommy e Sophia; e i pronipoti Aarna, Felix, Leela e Griffin.

Nasce a Sant'Onofrio, in Calabria, Italia, Paolo emigrò a Toronto nel 1951, unendosi coraggiosamente ad altri giovani parenti e paesani maschi nell'iniziare una nuova vita in un mondo profondamente estraneo. Nonostante le barriere linguistiche e le differenze culturali, Paolo, un maestro muratore dotato di grande determinazione, fondò presto una propria impresa di muratura. Coinvolse i suoi fratelli e i familiari più stretti nell'attività e ha assunto altri familiari e amici della sua vecchia città natale. Paolo aiutò generosamente altri di Sant'Onofrio a immigrare a Toronto e a iniziare la loro vita nel nuovo Paese.

Dopo molti anni di duro lavoro, Paolo si ritirò e ci sorprese tutti con nuovi talenti creativi, dipingendo e scolpendo numerose opere che erano di volta in volta affascinanti, ultraterrene, colorate, giocose, nostalgiche e persino satiriche. Nonostante gli fu offerte denaro diverse volti, si rifiutò sempre di vendere le sue opere, limitandosi a regalarle. Le sue opere adornano la sua casa, dove ha vissuto per 60 anni, e le case di pochi, felici e fortunati, familiari e amici.

Ha trovato un nuovo entusiasmo per la vita negli anni della pensione, non solo attraverso le sue fiorenti attività creative, ma anche attraverso le sue numerose nuove amicizie speciali al West Hill Social Activity Club. Amava trascorrere il tempo con gli amici, partecipando ad attività culturali, celebrando eventi speciali e giocando a bocce, esponendo i suoi numerosi trofei di squadra in bella vista in tutta la casa insieme alle sue opere d'arte. Aveva anche un legame speciale con i suoi amici e vicini di lunga data, ed era particolarmente grato per il loro sostegno negli ultimi anni.

Un uomo tradizionale che non muoveva mai un dito in cucina, non ebbe altra scelta che farsi avanti quando Caterina si ammalò e morì in seguito. E lo fece! Appassionato di nuove conoscenze, iniziò a cucinare i suoi piatti preferiti alla giovane età di 90 anni, imparando persino quali supermercati offrivano le migliori offerte e trascorrendo felicemente il tempo guardando programmi di cucina italiana. A 85 anni, Paolo era ancora impegnato a rifare il tetto del suo garage; e continuò a occuparsi personalmente della manutenzione della casa e del giardino fino all'età di 95 anni, salendo su scale alte 3 metri per potare gli alberi e pulire le grondaie. Come se non bastasse, ha anche iniziato un nuovo passatempo: la lettura, divorando una varietà di libri sia in italiano che in inglese, tra cui il suo preferito, la Trilogia di Dante.

Paolo è stato molto grato al personale dell'Unità di Cure Palliative e delle Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence per le cure eccezionali che gli hanno fornito e per le loro interazioni amichevoli e coinvolgenti. La nostra famiglia esprime i suoi più sinceri ringraziamenti al personale per il loro impegno nel far sentire Paolo a suo agio durante il suo soggiorno.
