Nabil (Bill) Joseph Mazhar died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 79 on June 22, 2025.
A loving husband to Allison for 56 years, Bill was father to Laura (Leonard), Heather and Mark (Kristen). He will be deeply missed by his two grandchildren, Christian and Lincoln, who brought so much joy to his life. Bill is survived by his two brothers, John (Jan) and George (Kathy). He was the son of Yousef and Margaret Mazhar.
Bill was born in Haifa, Palestine on May 15, 1946. Seeking refuge during the 1948 Nakba, his family moved to Egypt, where he spent his childhood. Not being able to return to their homeland in Palestine, his family moved to Canada 1965.
Bill was a proud Canadian. It was in Canada where he helped create a wonderful life for his wife and children and made lifelong friends, including Sam Arage, a friend of more than five decades. The Mazhar family also included a multitude of pets over the years, although none captured his heart quite like Monty. The feeling was mutual.
Bill built a career in the courier industry — including 25 years at Purolator — starting as a courier and working his way to Director of Air Operations.
Bill discovered his love of soccer while attending English Mission School in Egypt. When his son Mark started playing soccer, Nabil took up coaching. And he continued coaching even after Mark had grown. His popularity with the players is a testament to his kindness and his coaching style, a mix of fun and competitiveness. It always sparked pride when former players and parents still referred to him as “Coach.”
Bill was an avid golfer, known for a swing so unique witnesses may have wondered how his ball ever got airborne. Somehow, with an awkward takeaway and a dependable 50-yard slice, he’d consistently land it 180 yards straight down the middle. All jokes aside, anyone betting against Bill on a 25-footer with a four-foot break and $5 on the line, was going home $5 poorer.
Bill had a great sense of humour. He was friendly, outgoing and generous to a fault. He was a loyal friend who loved his family and his work. Bill was a man you could always count on.
