Today, we gather to commemorate Mr. Chan Chung-Wai, my husband. On behalf of my family, I extend our deepest gratitude to all friends and relatives who have come. Mr. Chan Chung-Wai passed away from liver cancer, but fortunately, he did not suffer much. He received morphine injections at North York General Hospital during emergency treatment, and he did not cry out in pain. He was very clear-minded and knew that our family was by his side until his last breath, passing away peacefully with a smile on his lips.
Mr. Chan Chung-Wai was a businessman who had dealings with mainland China for decades. He was fortunate to encounter China’s reform and opening-up policy and the poverty alleviation strategy. At the end of 1979, we were invited by Xinhua News Agency along with a group of Hong Kong businessmen to visit mainland China and understand the national situation. After the trip, we learned about the Chinese government’s open policy and its attempt to introduce foreign enterprises’ technology and investment models. We helped connect foreign enterprises with domestic production units. About 10 to 20 years later, mainland China had developed the capability to independently undertake various business projects, achieving breakthrough developments in multiple fields.
In the early 1980s, Mr. Chan also followed his predecessors in participating in the construction of Wuyi University, aiming to provide educational opportunities for the children of Wuyi and improve the overall quality and level of education in the region, thereby enhancing its advantages and creating more economic benefits. Over time, Wuyi University has become a well-known comprehensive school. Mr. Chan witnessed the growth and development of Wuyi University and served as the vice-chairman of its board of directors.
Before Hong Kong’s return to China, a group of us friends wanted to contribute to the country, so we established the China Spark Foundation to carry out educational assistance activities in 19 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions, including Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Jiangxi. We assisted in economic development and improved welfare facilities, completing over 160 projects, including the construction of 140 primary and secondary schools and sponsoring over 4,000 students. Later, in the Wuyi region, we also funded the construction of teaching buildings, piano rooms, libraries, dormitory buildings, and sponsored nearly 200 impoverished students. The most gratifying thing is seeing each student succeed in their careers and become useful members of society.
In Hong Kong, he also participated in multiple business associations and served as the president, working diligently and self-disciplinarily. He established a business association charity foundation to prevent corruption and fraud, earning praise from his peers. He also promoted patriotic education in the association’s schools to help students recognize their identity, receiving commendation from the Education Bureau.
Mr. Chan Chung-Wai was an optimistic, cheerful, and kind person. Even when he was seriously ill twice, he never complained but actively sought medical treatment. He told us that if you are sick, you should seek treatment, and if there is no way to treat it, then try to save yourself. If self-rescue fails, then accept it and leave.
These days, I have received many condolences from friends, all praising Mr. Chan Chung-Wai for his kindness, charity, and continuous good deeds, benefiting countless people and leaving a lasting reputation. Our family is proud of him and will carry on his spirit, living life positively!
