It is with deep sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Maria Eduarda Sousa Madureira, who passed away on August 30, 2026, in Etobicoke, Ontario, at the age of 83 surrounded by loved ones.
Born on September 22, 1942, in Nazaré, Portugal, Maria Eduarda lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and kindness. In 1973, she immigrated to Canada, where she built a loving home in Toronto, made lifelong friendships, and became a cherished member of her community.
Maria Eduarda (aka Gramma Eddie) devoted 30 years of service to the Toronto Public Library, where she was respected for her dedication, warmth, and commitment to helping others. Following her retirement, she continued to invest her time in the people and causes she cared about most.
A devout member of the Portuguese Adventist Church, Maria Eduarda's faith was the foundation of her life. She found joy in worship, fellowship, and service within her church community. Her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and compassion touched the lives of many.
Above all else, Maria Eduarda loved her family. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Fernando; her daughter, Rosa (Mark); and her son, Rui (Rebecca).
She was a proud grandmother to Kayla (Frederic), Alyssa, Natasha, Eavan, and Shea, and a cherished great-grandmother to Declan and Athena.
Maria Eduarda will also be fondly remembered by her step-sons, Phillipe Pires and Daniel Pires, and by Daniel's daughter, Sophia.
Outside of her family and faith, Maria Eduarda found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, gardening, and spending time with those she loved. Her home was often filled with warmth, laughter, handmade treasures, and beautiful gardens that reflected her caring nature.
Maria Eduarda leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, perseverance, and faith. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, church family, and all who were blessed to know her.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 2:30pm at the Portuguese Adventist Church, 280 Carlingview Drive, Etobicoke, Ontario, M9W 5G1.
Though she is no longer with us, her love, faith, and example will remain in our hearts forever.
