It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Kum Lan Wong, with her family by her side in Thornhill, Ontario.
Originally from Guangdong province in China, Kum Lan, the oldest of five children, took on the responsibility of raising her siblings at a very young age. She later relocated to Hong Kong and, at the age of 25, courageously moved to Canada. Known for her generosity, hard work and resilience, she raised her own children as well as her nieces and nephews.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including maintaining accommodations for her growing family, Kum Lan was determined to provide a stable and loving home. After several relocations, she was driven to purchase a house to ensure her family had a permanent place to call home. With the support of a kind neighbor who graciously offered to be a guarantor, she successfully secured a home for her family. Kum Lan worked for the National Rubber Company for over 25 years to provide for her family and to ensure they had the essentials: a roof over their heads, food on the table, and clothing.
Kum Lan cherished her family deeply, finding immense joy in the accomplishments and milestones they achieved. She was also very talented and knowledgeable in understanding what and how to make traditional medicines to treat various conditions. She embraced all who joined her growing family with open arms. You were truly accepted when she offered you a bowl of nourishing herbal soup, thus recognizing you as one of her own and bringing you into her circle of care. Everyone who became part of the family was truly honored and blessed to be included, cherishing the deep connections and joyful moments shared amongst the family.
Kum Lan was preceded in death by her husband, Nin Sing Wong. She is survived by her nine children: Wing Chun (spouse May), Sau May (spouse David), Wing Ming (spouse Sue), Wing Bee (spouse Mei Ping), Sau Yin, Sau Ling (spouse Peter), Wing Leung (spouse Chinet), Wing Hong, and Soo Kin (spouse Mac); 18 grandchildren: Diana (spouse Sean), Matthew, Richard (spouse Amy), Janice (spouse Eugene), Kevin, Geoffrey, Carissa, Brandon, Michael Philip, Alicia, Katherine, Alice, Michael Matthew, Christine, Viviane, Lauryn, Jiliane, and Madelyn; and three great-grandchildren: Amaya, Angelie, and Margot.
Mom, you will be greatly missed but will forever be in our hearts!
