Kevin was someone who appreciated everything. He loved the beauty in the small things and used his camera to find beautiful moments. As a cameraman he was also known to enjoy the big things like hanging out of a helicopter while filming, travelling to China to document Smile China's cleft palate repairs with Canadian delegations of doctors, taking a gig following a religious rock group to Russia! His job took him around the world, landing at Credit Valley Hospital where he did many training videos in surgery and around the hospital.
Kevin's courage facing down a long and arduous battle with a rare, early-onset degenerative neurological disease, took him from a career and people he loved too soon.
Kevin was a beautiful and dedicated father. He never missed a single of Tieg's hockey games and spent countless hours driving to King City to watch Keely horseback ride, taking pictures and talking about whether Tip Top was a good horse. He was at the hospital on the day Tip Top was a very bad horse and Keely broke several bones.
In preparing for this day, I found 9300 selfies with our youngest daughter, Annika, who, in the silver lining of his early retirement, he was able to spend a lot of time with. He spent much of her childhood submitting to a near-daily full face of makeup. I would come home many days not knowing if it would be zombies or princesses who would greet me. His greatest joy in our last few years has been watching Annika flourish at synchronized swimming. He was so happy that she will have her good friends and her teammates to wrap their arms around her through this time.
Kevin provided a calm and steadfast love for this family that we have been so lucky to enjoy.
My best guess is that Kevin is now spending his time arguing about silly stuff with my dad and his dad, catching up on selfies with our son Dax, taking care of his beautiful niece Sabrina, and losing at Scrabble to Fluff.
Down here, we will miss him and love him forever.
A celebration of life is being planned for later in the month. Return here for date and details in the coming days.
