KATHARINA DUHATSCHEK
An indominable force of nature for 94 and a half years of life, Katharina Duhatschek passed away peacefully, with her children by her side, on May 7, 2026, at the Sunnybrook Holland Centre in Toronto. Beloved mother of Eric (Lisa) and Monica (Dan). Proud grandmother to Lisa (Brennan), Stephen (Alison), Adam (Clare) and Paula (Evan) and great grandmother to Raymond. Predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Andreas, in 2011. Nothing mattered more to Katharina than her devoted and extended family. She found the strength to recover almost fully from a stroke in 2022, largely so she could attend the weddings of all four of her grandchildren. At the end, nothing gave her greater pleasure than seeing images of her first great grandchild, “baby Ray,” born in February - and the knowledge that two more great grandchildren were on their way. Her life was a story of resilience – a living example of how far determination and hard work could take one in life. She and Andreas emigrated to Canada from Austria in 1953, without knowing a word of English. She forged a successful career as a hairdresser – first in a salon and then running a business of her own for 15 years. Customers became lifelong friends. In between, she taught hairdressing for eight years at the same school where she originally trained. The fact that she was able to do so, in her second language, was an enormous point of personal pride. Katharina was an accomplished baker and in 2017, along with her daughter Monica, published the Danube Swabian Cookbook, a project designed to preserve cherished family recipes for the generations to follow – and to anecdotally, chronicle her life’s remarkable journey. The happiest moments of her post-retirement life came at the family cottage, where she watched her grandchildren grow up – from babies to children to teenagers to adulthood. She took the greatest pleasure in seeing them, swimming, tubing, waterskiing and simply living the good life in the great Ontario outdoors. Right up to the end, she always had a meal to plan and a sunset to admire, surrounded by the people that she cared about the most.
