Born in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario on April 17, 1942, to Dave and Margaret LeMay, John went on to graduate from St. Michael’s High School in Toronto. He then earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto.
He met his wife Susan at a Tea Dance in Montreal. They married in 1966 and settled in Sudbury where John started his 43-year career with INCO (later Vale). During his career, John managed INCO’s energy operations and was deeply involved in energy policy. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator.
John and Susan traveled in their spare time taking family trips to Cape Cod every summer and travelling on their own to NYC as well as other adventures. John had a unique ability to remember specifics of almost every meal he had on vacation. He just couldn’t tell you where he ate them.
John was an active member and long-time Treasurer of the Sudbury Yacht Club, competitively racing Enterprises and then Lasers into his early 70’s. When he retired, he moved to Toronto where he and Susan continued to travel regularly until Susan’s passing in April of 2024.
He is survived by his children, William (Ayesha), Catherine, grandchildren Liam, Emma and Kai along with his brother Paul (Alice Anne, predeceased), sister Madelyn and brother-in-law Bob (Gay) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Denise (Dennis, surviving), Marguriete (Jay, predeceased) and sister-in-law Margo.
