Dr John Fong passed away peacefully at North York General Hospital on July 8, 2025, at the age of 83. He faced both lung cancer and urothelial cancer with great courage, thriving despite these challenges over the past six to seven years.
Born on Dec 20, 1941 in Hong Kong, he was the beloved son of Man Chong Fong and Chi Wai Leung. John grew up in a large family with seven siblings. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Sophie Ko-Fong, his son Edwin Fong (and daughter-in-law Tammie Poon-Fong). John was a proud and devoted grandfather to Quinlan Fong and Quinton Fong.
He attended Wah Yan College for both middle and high school before moving to Canada to pursue his studies. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s University (Halifax) and went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1968.
On June 19, 1969, he married the love of his life, Sophie. As a family physician, John devoted his career to caring for patients at the Beech Medical Clinic for several decades before retiring to spend more time with family and friends. Together with Sophie and their extended family, he cherished many years splitting time between Toronto and Vancouver.
A private burial for the immediate family only will be held on July 26, 2025.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you remember John by sharing a favourite memory via "the Guestbook" below or performing a random act of kindness.
