Jim was born September 14, 1952 in Toronto and passed away August 10, 2026 in Newmarket following a brief illness, with his wife Katherine ( Kate) and his dog Alfie by his side. He is pre-deceased by his parents Frederick (Fred) and Annie Margaret (Peg) as well as his first wife Gail. Besides Kate, Jim is survived by his brother John (Arva), Jim’s children Mark (Eli), Michael (Amy) and Stephen (Noah) and his grandchildren, Thomas and Abigail. He is also survived by Kate’s children Jake (Kaitlyn) and Jessica Bartlett.

Jim enjoyed a distinguished professional career. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics degree in 1976 and subsequently joined Munich Reinsurance Company where he remained until his retirement at the end of 2007. At the time of his retirement, Jim was president of the company’s Canadian and Caribbean operations and chairman of the board of its subsidiary in the United States.

Jim was elected by the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) to serve a three-year term on its governing council followed by a two-year term as vice president and then as president reflecting his many years of leadership and dedicated service to his profession. Jim also received one of the first Lifetime Awards from the CIA.

Jim was an avid, passionate golfer, who was known by the nickname “Bear”. He was a member of Beacon Hall since 2008. During his time there he served on many committees over the years joining their Board of Directors in 2023. In addition to Beacon Hall, Jim was a member, since 2006, of the Loxahatchee club in Jupiter, Florida, where he spent his winters.

In addition to golf, Jim was a lifelong fan of both the Cleveland Browns and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He will be remembered for his laugh, smile, and his many friendships.

Visitation will be at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, on Tuesday August 18 from 10:00 to 12:00 with the funeral following. After the funeral, Jim will be in interred at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. There will also be a celebration of life at the Loxahatchee Club in November.
