It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Ioannis (John) Kyriopoulos announces the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, on January 20th, 2026, at the age of 88 years old.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of over 50 years, Evdokia (Kokkinakis). Ioannis leaves to mourn his loss, his dearest children, Eygenia (Nick) Lioutas and Kostas (Senna) Kyriopoulos, and his granddaughters, who were his pride and joy and the heart of his legacy, Evanthia and Ioanna Lioutas.
Ioannis was born on March 14th, 1937, in Mistraki, Messinia, Greece, to parents Konstantinos and Eugenia (Tsokas). He was the third oldest of ten children and spent his childhood herding sheep and running wild with his siblings in the olive groves that surrounded his family’s home. Ioannis was always a fearless leader and a hard worker; he worked in the mines in Halkidiki and later travelled throughout Greece with the military before immigrating to Canada in July 1963, with his new bride by his side.
After settling down in Toronto, Ioannis and Evdokia set about building a new life in their adopted homeland. Together they sponsored many family members to join them in creating a new beginning in Canada. They welcomed them with open arms and generously made their house everyone’s first home. Never forgetting from where he came, Ioannis enjoyed gathering with his siblings and friends and regaling each other with stories from their childhoods. Ioannis worked tirelessly to support his family; in the late 60’s, he and four of his brothers embarked on a joint business venture, a successful restaurant that ran for over 30 years.
Never afraid of a new adventure, he and his family moved North of Toronto, where he opened his own restaurant. It is a local favourite to this day, with his son and daughter-in-law carrying on his legacy. Ioannis brought so much joy to the customers he served, providing great food and a personal greeting to all his regulars. A testament to his character, Ioannis showed up every day to hand-cut halibut, right up until his passing.
Ioannis had an unmatched energy for life and a vibrant sense of humour. He loved making his granddaughters laugh, going on long walks in his neighbourhood, and tending to his bountiful vegetable garden. He was so happy that he had the recent opportunity to visit his homeland one last time, with his children by his side. Everyone who knew him, was made better by having him in their lives. We love and miss him and find solace in his passing knowing that he will be reunited with his wife and family in heaven.
