Henry was known by his friends as a storyteller. Born and raised in Toronto, his earliest stories were of his childhood in the Dundas-Spadina neighborhood and later of his youth in Weston, being one of the few black families there at the time.
Henry, known to some as Brud, was the son of Henry Sr. and Marion (née Williams of Amherst N.S.). His father, dear sister Evelyn and Uncle Frank were once well known in the Toronto jazz community. His mother was active in organizing the festival which would eventually become Caribana. Henry had stories of his 30- year career in management at Eaton's and his service on the boards of the Ontario Black History Society, the Toronto Historical Houses Board and his condominium. He volunteered at Metropolitan Community Church and at McKenzie House, helped arrange the Spee and Dee dances and participated in Toronto's first Pride March. He was an avid reader, book club member and movie enthusiast. was a devoted CBC Radio listener and nothing could keep him away from watching every episode of Coronation Street! His stories also included tales of his many travel experiences worldwide.
Henry loved his life and died peacefully at his home surrounded by love. He leaves behind his beloved husband, Richard, numerous dear cousins, adoring in-laws and a host of faithful friends.
We thank the exceptional healthcare teams at the Odette Cancer Centre and elsewhere for their compassionate care over the past few years.
