Harvey Paul Barron
April 21, 1931 - August 26, 2026
With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Harvey Paul Barron, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, community leader and friend. Harvey passed away on August 26, 2026, at the age of 95.
Harvey lived a remarkable life defined by hard work, family, community and service to others.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Harvey attended St. Michael’s College School, an experience that formed part of his early life in the city. After meeting the love of his life and starting a family, Harvey moved to Sharon, Ontario, where he was the project manager of a single-family home co-operative. In this role, he assisted in the building of many new homes and helped establish a growing community. While living in Sharon, he also served as a school trustee on the Sharon School Board.
Harvey received his business education at Ryerson and joined Canada’s largest retail chain, Eaton’s, where he moved up through the junior executive ranks before opening his own business, Carpetman, in the Cliffside Village community of Scarborough. Harvey was a founding member of the Scarborough Businessman Association and the Cliffside Village Business Improvement Area, the first BIA of its kind in Scarborough.
Harvey’s commitment to his community eventually led him into public service. He served as a Scarborough City Councillor from 1985 to 1997, where he championed numerous projects and causes on behalf of local residents.
Among the accomplishments of which he was most proud was his work to secure a new home for the Phyllis Griffiths Neighbourhood Centre, an organization providing vital social services and a welcoming community hub. Through years of advocacy, lobbying and fundraising, Harvey helped make possible the construction of a new facility that became the Birchmount Community Centre. Today, the centre continues to serve the community with a wide range of programs and services, including a swimming pool and meeting spaces for local non-profit organizations.
Harvey’s service to others continued long after his political career ended. He was actively involved with charitable organizations, including the Lions Club, and devoted his time to initiatives such as prescription eyeglass recycling and distribution, food bank support, and the development of the playground and splash pad at Scarborough Crescent Park.
Away from business and public life, Harvey enjoyed sports and recreation, including golf, fishing and stamp collecting.
Above all, Harvey was devoted to his family.
He is survived by Elizabeth (Betty), his beloved wife of 75 years, and their eight children: Paul (Catherine), Diane, Ted (Lynda), Dave (Pamela), Andy (Tina), Joanne (Kelly), John (Lindsey), and Mary (Richard).
Harvey was a much-loved grandfather to 21 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom were an enormous source of pride and joy throughout his life.
Harvey dedicated his life to helping others, particularly those in need. His legacy lives on in the community he helped build, the causes he supported and, most of all, in the generations of family and friends whose lives he touched. He will be sadly missed.
Service Information:
A private family service will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and interment at Pine Hills Cemetery.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to commemorate his full and meaningful life.
