Hans Zinsmeister passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital in Toronto, Ontario at 84 years of age. He was born on April 2, 1942, in Germany.
Hans’ life began during one of the most difficult periods in history. He was born on a kitchen table in the midst of the Second World War, as bombs fell, and families struggled through fear, starvation, and uncertainty. His earliest years were marked by great hardship. His father died as a soldier during the war, and his mother later left him behind as she immigrated to Toronto. These early events left him unrooted in life.
Hans was predeceased by his parents (Samuel & Elsa) and his sister (Gisela). He is remembered by his former wife, Joanna Zinsmeister, who was devoted to him always. He will be lovingly remembered by his three children: his daughter, Stephanie (partner Luisa), and his sons, Raymond and Paul.
Hans was a grandfather to Zane and Michela, children of Raymond, and Lucas, Julian, and Owen, children of Stephanie. He was also a great-grandfather to Arabella, daughter of Zane.
Hans lived a life filled with curiosity, adventure, creativity, and deep appreciation for the natural world around him. He spent many years as a truck driver with Canada Cartage, a career that suited his independent spirit and love of the open road. His work took him across every corner of North America, allowing him to experience countless landscapes, communities, and moments along the way.
A true lover of nature, Hans found joy in camping, fishing, and canoeing. He appreciated the peace and beauty of the outdoors and the simple pleasures found in time spent surrounded by nature. His Volkswagen Beetle held a special place in his heart, as it carried many cherished memories of family camping trips and adventures together.
Hans had a lifelong love of learning and discovery. He was an avid reader who kept the public library busy, always eager to explore new stories, ideas, and knowledge. He also had a remarkable talent for woodworking, creating beautiful pieces with patience, skill, and artistry. He proudly shared his creations of artwork and furniture with other people.
Hans will be remembered for his thoughtful nature, quiet strength, creativity, craftsmanship, and the many passions that made him unique. His stories, his creations, and the memories he gave to others will continue to live on.
He mastered the art of making the perfect apple pie, picking and choosing the perfect blend of Granny Smith apples and spices.
He will be deeply missed by his family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
