It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hamazasib Stepanian on June 22, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born on November 14, 1939, in Mosul, Iraq, Hamazasib was a proud Armenian whose life was defined by courage, humility, leadership, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He carried his Iraqi Armenian heritage with pride throughout his life, honoring the values of faith, resilience, and perseverance that shaped his character.
His passion and talent for football earned him the distinguished honor of representing Iraq on the National Football Team, where he proudly served as Captain. During his distinguished career, he had the privilege of playing alongside the legendary Ammo Baba, one of Iraq's greatest football icons. Together, they celebrated numerous championship victories while proudly representing their country with skill, sportsmanship, and dedication.
In 1977, Hamazasib made one of the most courageous decisions of his life. Together with his family, he immigrated to Canada, determined to build a brighter future for his children. In Canada, he gave back to the game by coaching Homenetmen Toronto, where he mentored countless young athletes. His passion for the sport also inspired him to establish the Toronto Armenian Soccer League, creating opportunities for generations of players and families within the Armenian community.
Hamazasib's love for football never faded. A lifelong supporter of Manchester United, he faithfully followed the club through every triumph and challenge.Though he left behind a distinguished football career in Iraq, he carried with him the same determination that had defined his years on the pitch. In Canada, he built a new life rooted in hard work, love, and devotion to his family. His greatest victory was not measured in championships, but in the life he created for those he loved. To his many friends and community, he was simply known as "Coach"—a nickname that reflected his lifelong commitment to leading, teaching, and inspiring others.
Hamazasib is lovingly remembered by his cherished wife, Piradohi; his beloved sons, Raffi and Vikan; his daughters-in-law, Fatima and Ani; and his cherished granddaughter, Lara. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
May God grant him eternal rest.
