Greg Dennis, age 68, of Toronto, died peacefully at home on September 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Halifax to Bill and Frances Dennis, Greg grew up in Riverview, New Brunswick, carousing with a group of close buddies who stayed lifelong friends.
In 1989, Greg met the love of his life, Robin, when the two were working as journalists at “little mitv" in Halifax before it became part of Global TV. Greg followed Robin to Toronto to work in the Global newsroom. The two married in 1991, sharing 35 years of love and laughter. They built a beautiful life focused on their two wonderful boys, Jack and Henry. While Greg was a committed journalist, writer, and communicator as a career and a lifelong storyteller, the most important thing in his life was his family.
Greg had a top four list of his loves:
1. Family
2. Baseball
3. Music
4. Soup
Greg was the most fanatical of Boston Red Sox fans. The only ball teams that topped the Bosox for his devotion were any that Jack and Henry played for Greg enthusiastically coached both boys and many other young men over several years and instilled in them a love of the game. He also played pickup hockey and slo-pitch softball and cheered for the New England Patriots and the frustrating Toronto Maple Leafs.
Music was a lifelong joy for Greg. His massive album collection is legendary and many a conversation started with “you know, this band only made one album, but their influence! Well, that's another story.”
His avid love of Robin’s cooking would lead him to wax poetic about a good homemade soup and to dream of opening a soup shop.
Greg never forgot his Maritime roots – looking forward to spending time at his happy place, the family cottage in Malagash, NS, and salmon fishing in NB with his dad, brother and friends.
His wit and acerbic sense of humour will be missed, as will his empathy and loyalty and strength. No one was a better friend than Greg.
Those who didn't see below the surface of Greg's fun guy personality might be surprised at the grace and dignity he showed in facing his incurable prognosis. Those who knew him deeply still marveled at his strength. When he was diagnosed with glioblastoma in May 2025, he vowed to make the most of the time he had left. For Greg, that meant spending all the time he could with family and friends. Thus, a stream of parties, visits and toasts followed. And as a committed Dennis, Greg would continue to do his family proud by always being the last one at any party. He kept his humour and love of life to the end.
Greg is survived by:
His loving wife of 35 years, Robin Smythe;
His children Jack and Henry Dennis;
His siblings Terry Dennis (Karen), Stephanie Gibb (Tim), Tracey Hotta (Greg);
His father, Bill Dennis; and
His nieces and nephews Corey, Evan, Rachel, Will, Evan, Aidan, Tovah, Nolan and Quinn.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances (Raddall) Dennis.
