A memorial service will be held at Elgin Mills Funeral Centre (1591 Elgin Mills Road East, Richmond Hill, Ontario) on Thursday, August 27th, 2026 at 12:15 p.m. with an interment to follow at 3:00 p.m. at Elgin Mills Cemetery.

Gerald Arthur Kane, born on June 13, 1935 in Toronto, passed away peacefully July 21, 2026 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Gerry was born to parents from Lithuania, Fanny and Sam. Gerry’s father passed away when he was just five years old. He and his younger brother Marty were raised by their mother and maternal grandmother. Gerry owed his rich Yiddish language to his grandmother. His parents were both ardent revolutionaries, and he was immersed in Toronto’s communist Jewish community virtually from birth. He was educated both in the city’s public schools, and in a combination of the communist Yiddish supplementary school (Morris Winchevsky School) and the socialist I.L. Peretz Workmen’s Circle School. Gerry’s social circle was thoroughly communist, affiliated with the United Jewish People’s Order (the Ordn). The family had a dacha at Camp Naivelt (Camp New World), established near Brampton, Ontario in 1925 as the summer retreat of the Jewish Labour League Mutual Benefit Society (since 1945, the United Jewish People’s Order). After training in radio and television at Ryerson Polytechnic, Gerry had a successful career in radio and in advertising, serving as Creative Director and President at some of Canada’s largest advertising agencies, and attributes his gift for communication to the Jewish left: they believed in a shenerer un beserer velt, a more beautiful and better world.
Later, Gerry served on the executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress in Toronto, and on the Committee for Yiddish (a lay committee devoted to Yiddish culture, founded in the 1960s and still active today through the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto). Gerry was also a founder of the Secular Jewish Association in Toronto, which began in 1969 (today, Oraynu, a secular humanistic Jewish association). In 2009, Gerry took over the Yiddish Vinkl column in the Canadian Jewish News; he aimed to make Yiddish relevant once again to North American Jews, and wrote on a wide variety of topics to sustain interest in Yiddish when it was waning.
Sholom Aleichem, traditionally translated as “peace be upon you” was the pen name of Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, the beloved Yiddish author and playwright who was famously celebrated as one of the founding giants of modern Yiddish literature. He spent his entire life dedicated to the written and spoken word giving an authentic voice to millions. Gerry aspired to follow in the footsteps of this literary mentor, to give voice to the Yiddish language. Gerry possessed an expansive collection of Yiddish literature which has been donated to The Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. These books will be distributed to college classrooms and libraries around the world and preserved for future generations.
Gerry was married to his beautiful wife Phyllis, who lovingly supported him for sixty-five years. For most of those 65 years they lived in Toronto and enjoyed most weekends and summers at their cottage in the Kawarthas surrounded by family and friends. Gerry and Phyllis loved being a part of family celebrations and traditions. Storytelling, animated discussions and debate were so often a part of these gatherings. Much laughter, much joy and an abundance of love were always overflowing.
Gerry leaves behind a vibrant legacy,
shaped by a passion for history, music, art, theatre and literature.
Gerry has left the world a quieter place.

beloved brother, husband, father, uncle and gramps.
