It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of George Sipsas, of Scarborough, on September 8, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

George was born on April 15, 1956. He was the beloved husband of MaryEllen, and a devoted father to Dean (Jaclyn) and Ryan (Kristy). He is now reunited with his cherished children, Christine and Peter, who predeceased him.

He was a proud and loving grandfather to Nathan (Justine), Jules (Gwen) and Baby, as well as a treasured great-grandfather to Kaleb and Briar. George will also be deeply missed by his siblings, Helen, Anthi, Peter and Suzy, along with his extended family and the many friends whose lives he touched.

For many years, George worked as a driving instructor, teaching countless people across Toronto the skills and confidence to get behind the wheel. For George, it was about more than simply passing a road test - he taught patience, awareness, responsibility and respect for the road. Over the years, he became the trusted instructor for generations of family, friends and their children, many of whom can say that George was the one who taught them to drive. And once George taught you, the lessons never really ended - even years later, he was never afraid to let you know when your parking could use a little work. His patience, guidance and unmistakable personality left an impression on every student who sat beside him.

Outside of work, George was happiest taking care of the people around him. He was a loving, kind and incredibly generous man who would give the shirt off his back to help someone. His door was always open, and if you were with George, you were going to be well fed, have a drink in your hand, a warm fire nearby and good music playing.

If you knew George, chances are he knew your favourite song. He was the DJ who could keep the music going all night and always seemed to know exactly what needed to play next.

His hospitality was equally legendary. Asking George to make you a drink meant accepting that it would probably be much stronger than expected, and telling him the fire wasn’t big enough was a challenge best issued at your own risk.

A true feta and olive connoisseur, George appreciated good food, good company and bringing people together. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the cottage surrounded by family and friends, or somewhere warm beneath a palm tree.

George had a special way of making people feel welcome, cared for and part of the family. He leaves behind countless memories, plenty of stories, and a lifetime of music that will continue to remind those who loved him of the wonderful man he was.

His music may have stopped, but the memories he gave us will play on forever.

Please join us at the following services at St. Demetrios Church on Saturday September 12, 2026: Visitation to begin at 10am, service to follow at 11am, concluding with burial at Pine Hills Cemetery.
