BENNETT, ELFIE ROSEMARIE January 15, 1950 – September 4, 2026 On Friday, September 4, 2026, our beloved Elfie Bennett passed away following a sudden and devastating stroke. She was 76 years old, and she was cherished beyond measure. Elfie was a remarkable woman and incredible human. Her warmth, curiosity, intelligence, sense of fairness, strength, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. To know Elfie was an absolute privilege. She laughed easily with her whole heart and enjoyed making the people around her feel valued and loved. An afternoon with Elfie was never just an afternoon — it was a gift. There was always a story worth telling, a question that made you think, a shared laugh, and the quiet, unmistakable optimism for a fairer more just world. Elfie was born on January 15, 1950, to Theo and Erika Lipfert in Germany. In 1957, her family moved to Northern Ontario, where she grew up and thrived in school, consistently earning high grades and academic honours. After graduating from high school, she attended teachers' college and began her career as an elementary school teacher, where her patience and curiosity found a natural home. Following the birth of her beloved daughter, Karen, Elfie's ever-curious nature led her to St. Jacobs and back to school at the University of Waterloo. Her life was never defined by just one path. She poured her creativity and intelligence into everything she did — running a children's daycare centre, hand-crafting beautiful wool sweaters to sell at her own store, bartending at the University of Waterloo's Graduate House, and pursuing her deep love of literature and psychology. During these rich, full years, she welcomed her son, Elijah, and later her second daughter, Erika. After moving with her family to Toronto, Elfie began what would become a long and accomplished career at Ontario Hydro. As one of the first women to work there as a Nuclear Operations Specialist/Section Manager Outage, she quietly broke barriers and continued to advance throughout her approximately 35-year career before retiring in 2019. Her determination, intelligence, and willingness to embrace new challenges stayed with her all her life — as did her humility about all she had accomplished. But Elfie's life was about so much more than her achievements. She was endlessly curious, dynamic, optimistic, and extraordinarily generous — with her time, her table, her wisdom, and her love. She adored her garden, treasured her community, and found deep joy and lasting friendship through the Toronto Choral Society, where her voice joined so many others in something greater than herself. She had a genuine, unhurried interest in people, and she built real friendships wherever life took her. Above all, Elfie loved her family with her whole heart. She was a devoted mother to Karen, Elijah, and Erika, and a deeply adored grandmother to Matthew, Emily, Rachel, and Willow. The love, the memories, the lessons, the laughter, and the countless small pieces of herself that she gave to her family will remain with them always, woven into who they are. Elfie is survived by her three children, Karen Madej (Rob), Elijah Bennett (Nicole), and Erika MacLaughlin (Luis); and her four grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Rachel, and Willow. She was predeceased by her parents, Theo and Erika Lipfert; and her sister, Annelie Lever. She leaves behind not only her family, but an extraordinary circle of friends, neighbours, choir members, former colleagues, and countless others whose lives were made brighter simply by knowing her. She was deeply, deeply loved, and she will be missed beyond what words can express. Losing Elfie so suddenly has left an unimaginable space in the lives of everyone who loved her. And yet, we will remember her for the way she lived — with curiosity, courage, generosity, and an open heart. Her life was full, vibrant, and uniquely her own, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all of us who were fortunate enough to receive it. Celebration of Life A celebration of Elfie's life will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, where a service will be held. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. All who loved her are warmly welcomed to join in remembering the joy she brought to our lives. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. For online condolences, please visit www.etouch.ca.
