Dr. John R. Wherrett

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. John R. Wherrett, an esteemed neurologist, devoted mentor, and cherished family man. John passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, in his 95th year, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of medical excellence, compassion, and intellectual curiosity.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on November 28, 1930 to Dr. George and Margaret Wherrett, John attended Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa and he discovered his passion for medicine at Queen’s Medical School, Class of '55.

Dr. Wherrett’s medical career was distinguished by a steadfast dedication to his field and his patients. He completed internships at Toronto General Hospital (TGH) and Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital, and a Neurology residency at TGH. He then went to the National Institute for Neurological Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland to study Neurochemistry, followed by PhD research in Biochemistry at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology, London, England.

In 1963, he was appointed to the Department of Medicine at the UofT and the medical staff of TGH and subsequently the Western Hospital. He established the first neurochemistry laboratory at TGH. From 1975 to 1989, he was Head of the Division of Neurology, guiding countless colleagues and shaping the future of neurological care in Canada. Known for his brilliance, unwavering integrity, and boundless empathy, he touched the lives of his patients, students, and peers alike. He was active in the Parkinson’s Foundation, the Brain Tissue Bank, and many other organizations. He retired after 53 years in practice.

Beyond his professional achievements, John avidly enjoyed the outdoors, including rugged outdoor summer jobs, canoe trips, hiking Booth’s rock in Algonquin Park, and spending memorable times at the cottage. He delighted in traveling the world, and playing golf and bridge with Margaret. His warmth, wisdom, and generosity will be profoundly missed.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Doreen, and his second wife, Ann, as well as his brother, Brian. He is lovingly remembered by his cherished partner, Margaret Wheler, his sons Christopher (Michelle) and Brian (Kim), and his adored grandsons Alexander and Stephen.
