Dr. Gregory Allan Robinson was united with his maker, God the Father, on May 17, 2026. He leaves behind his life partner, David. He is the son of Mervin Rae Robinson and Bernice Elsie Robinson (née Boyd). He is survived by his brothers, Claude and Stephen; his adopted sister, Laura Lee; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Greg cherished his relationship with his older sister, Kathy, who was reunited with their common birth mother, Bernice. Greg’s family also extended to the many LGBTQ2Q1 and HIV community members he met during his life and career.
Born in Windsor in 1956, Greg was an avid swimmer, enjoying speed swimming, lifeguarding, and serving as a summer program aquatic director at various camps in Essex County. He continued to swim as a master swimmer well into adulthood.
Greg’s persona revolved around his career as a physician in family medicine and later as an epidemiologist, public health officer, and community public health advocate. He attended the University of Windsor, Western University, McMaster University, and the University of Toronto.
Greg began his medical career in Dundas, where for eight years he had his own family practice. These years were filled with professional satisfaction and lasting friendships with the Hamilton Gang. He left practice in 1988 due to his HIV infection and the early stigma of being a physician with HIV. Greg then moved into the field of public health and epidemiology, completing a residency in Epidemiology and Public Health.
As an epidemiologist, Greg was most proud of his role in the renewal of the Canadian National HIV/AIDS Strategy in the late 1990s and his leadership as a lead epidemiologist in constructing the Ontario HIV/AIDS Cohort Database - HOOD - now called the Cohort Study. He also enjoyed working in the field of HIV/AIDS rehabilitation, contributing to policy and practice through organizations such as the Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation - now Realize - and Casey House.
Greg was the recipient of the Ontario AIDS Network Honour Roll Award; the HIV Legal Clinic James Kepner Award; the inaugural CWGHR Award for Excellence in HIV and Rehabilitation; and the Casey Award for volunteerism.
With his partner, Greg most enjoyed discovering the world. Together they had many adventures on land and sea over the years. He believed that the world is best shaped by how we care for each other and for community. They also enjoyed summers at their trailer with friends from Riverside Campground.
Donations in his memory should be directed to the Casey House – Dr. Gregory Robinson Research Fund.
