Andrew John Sarne, “Dr.Dad”, a respected physician and longtime member of the Ontario medical community, passed away peacefully in March 2026 in Scarborough, Ontario.
He was a devoted physician, a thoughtful colleague, and a caring member of the communities he served. Andrew practiced medicine with a deep sense of responsibility and compassion – for an incredible fifty plus years. Patients trusted him not only because of his medical knowledge but because he listened carefully and treated everyone with dignity and respect.
Born in the Augustow, Poland, Dr. Sarne grew up in the United Kingdom and studied medicine at the University of London, graduating in 1961. He immigrated to Canada in 1966, where he established his long and distinguished career in medicine. His work as a physician touched countless lives, and his quiet dedication left a lasting mark.
Those who knew Andrew remember his calm presence, his intelligence, and his understated sense of humour. Above all, they remember a kind and principled man who believed deeply in caring for others. His legacy lives on in the many patients he helped, the colleagues he mentored and worked alongside, and the family and friends who loved him.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Sarne was a photography expert and loved nature and gardening. He also enjoyed intellectual discussion, reading, and lifelong learning. “Dr. Dad” spent his last few years living lakeside on the “Bluffs” with his eldest daughter Josi (Josephine), her husband Dave Lichtenwalter (David) and Poppy the Newfoundland dog. He is survived by his brother Mark Lopianowski, Mark’s wife Ewa (Vernon, B.C.) and his younger sister Elizabeth (Bowen Island, B.C.). He also leaves behind his eldest son, Christopher and granddaughter Isabella, son David and daughter Anne Marie.
He will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.
A private family memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree or flower in his honor. Alternatively, donations in Dr. Sarne’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
