With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of David McClary on April 21 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto.
He will be deeply missed by his daughter Carol (Aaron), sisters Heather (Claude), Jill (Paul), and Marie (Jim), and beloved grandchildren Penny and Theo. He was a cherished uncle to D’Arcy, Jeffrey, Stephen, Andrew, Philip, Margaret, and Patricia.
Born in Toronto to Patricia (née Croucher) and “Mac” McClary, David grew up in Spring Valley, Ancaster, before the family settled in Etobicoke. He graduated from Richview Collegiate with a passion for sports—especially basketball, football, and golf.
David earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and proudly wore his iron engineer’s ring for life. He later completed an MBA at the University of Toronto.
His career was varied and covered several modalities, but he was especially proud of his time as General Manager of Toyota’s Canadian forklift division, which took him frequently to Japan and sparked a deep appreciation for its culture and business values.
After the birth of his daughter Carol, he founded Lorac Technologies to work from home and embrace fatherhood. He passed on his love of science, books, and sports to her. Later, he earned a teaching degree from OISE and upon becoming a grandfather, devoted himself once more—this time as “Papa”—to caring for his beloved granddaughter Penny. Nothing brought him more joy or pride than his daughter and grandchildren, to whom he was endlessly devoted.
An avid skier, David was a dedicated member of the High Park Ski Club and proudly achieved a Level 4 Ski Instructor rank. His athleticism and analytical mind made him a natural on the slopes.
David had a brilliant, curious mind and was passionate about environmental sustainability, energy innovation, and global equity. Known for his thoughtful debates and fact-based opinions, he was admired for both intellect and integrity.
His life was cut too short. David was a quiet gem whose light will continue to shine in those who loved him.
A celebration of David’s life will take place on Sunday, May 11, 2025 at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, M4T 2V8. Visitation at 2:00 pm, service at 3:00 pm, followed by a reception until 5:00 pm.
