Passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on June 17th in Toronto. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather aka Buppa, brother, uncle and a loyal friend whose quiet warmth and whimsy shaped the lives of all who knew him. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Kate and Ross; his son, Matthew and Shannon; and his four cherished grandsons, James, Jacob, Nicholas, and Spencer, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother, Chuck and Cheryl, and his sister-in-law, Marilyn and Richard Judge. David was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Dorothy and sister-in-law Maureen Clarke.
Born in Chicago and raised in Cleveland, David’s early years laid the foundation for a life marked by curiosity, determination, and kindness. In the early 60s, the family moved to the village of Fonthill in Niagara, where he began to build the life that would define him. David went on to earn an Honours BA from the University of Western Ontario, an accomplishment that deepened his own love of words and writing.
After marrying Nancy, David moved to Toronto to begin his professional journey with Canada’s leading magazine publisher, Maclean-Hunter. From there, he carved out a successful and fulfilling career in the advertising world, developing a particular expertise in real estate marketing. For many years, he also greatly enjoyed writing movie previews for Tribute, a free magazine once distributed in Cineplexes across North America. Through long nights and a bit of bravado, he eventually established his own freelance business, working from home for over 30 years—a path that allowed him not only professional success, but also the gift of being close to his young family.
David will be remembered for his gentle nature, his unwavering love for his family, and the pride he took in watching his children and grandchildren grow. He had a way of making his friends and others feel at ease, offering quiet support, thoughtful conversation, and a steady sense of humour. His knowledge and love of music and books and movies filled his leisure time and kept everyone up to date on what to listen to, read and watch. His legacy lives on in the strong, loving family he helped to build.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to his family doctor, Dr. Rahim Abdulhussein for his exceptional care, compassion and kind support to David and his family.
A gathering of friends and loved ones will be held on June 29th at Pine Hills Cemetery in Scarborough at 10a.m. followed by A Celebration of Live at 11a.m.
Donations in David’s memory can be made to The Church of the Holy Trinity, Guildwood or to the church’s Food Cupboard.
