The family of Daniel Allan Craigie is saddened to announce his passing on June 2nd.
Born on April 13th, 1945, in the working‑class community of Govan in Glasgow, Scotland, Danny lived a life well lived. He attended Fairfield Primary School and Govan High School, was active in his church choir, a member of the Boys’ Brigade, and an avid piper. He left school on his 15th birthday to begin an apprenticeship at Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering, where he learned his trade as an electrician. He did not know it at the time, but the pretty blonde‑haired girl named Olivia—who may or may not have misled him about her age—whom he met and asked out on New Year’s Day, 1964, would eventually become his wife and lifelong partner.
Danny and Olivia married on March 28th, 1968, at the historic Govan Parish Church. After a quick honeymoon in Edinburgh, they boarded the Empress of England to begin their new life in Canada. With little money to their names, they demonstrated the work ethic the Scots are known for, and within three years purchased the home where they would raise their three boys, travel the world from, and where Danny would eventually pass.
Danny was more than a provider for his family. He was a faithful and loving husband, and a devoted, attentive father who played an active role in his children’s lives. He volunteered as a Cub and Scout leader, chaperoned school trips, and—most importantly—spent time with his sons. His fondest memories were of family camping trips to Tea Kettle Campground, where he would hunt frogs and turtles with his boys and teach them how to fish. He gave the same attention to his grandchildren, teaching them to fish in the very same place.
In his free time, Danny was an avid piper and played in the Peel Regional Police Pipe Band until a devastating injury—tendonitis—ended his piping career. He was a Freemason, becoming Master of both Mount Dennis Lodge #599 and Ibrox Lodge #740, the latter of which two of his sons also belong to. Danny and Olivia were enthusiastic travellers, visiting dozens of countries around the world, with India, China, and the UAE among his most memorable destinations. His lifelong love for the Glasgow Rangers Football Club, formed in his youth in Govan, followed him to Canada, where he was a member of the Brampton Rangers Supporters Club.
Danny is survived by his wife Olivia (née Waterson); his sons Allan (Melissa), Iain (Jennifer), and Malcolm (Denise); and his grandchildren and step‑grandchildren Alanna, Ewan, Cameron, Hannah, Damien, and Hayley. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Allan Craigie; his mother, Margaret Craigie; his elder brother, Thomas; and his younger brother, Wellington.
He will be deeply missed, but his memory and legacy will live on.
An honest man here lies at rest,
As e'er God with His image blest:
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm'd,
Few heads with knowledge so inform'd:
If there's another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.
- Eulogy on my own friend, Robert Burns
