Concettina Butera passed away at the age of 94 after a long and beautiful life devoted to the people she loved most. In her final moments, she was surrounded by love and passed peacefully with her family by her side.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Concettina was the heart of her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Francesco (Cicco), and is lovingly remembered by their six children: Anna, Salvatore, Carmela, Rosalia, Vincenzo and Giuseppe.
She is also survived by her loving sister, Sebastiana.
She is loved by her grandchildren, Lenny, Constance, Anthony, Francesco, Connie, Daniella, Francesco, Francesca, Julia, Tina and Vincent, as well as her 10 great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable pride and joy.
Born in Pachino, Sicily, Concettina carried with her a strength that would define her life. With extraordinary courage, she left the home and country she knew to begin again in Canada, arriving in Halifax with Francesco and their three young children. Together, they built a new life from the ground up, rooted in family, hard work and hope for what the future could hold.
Family was the centre of Concettina’s world. Caring for those she loved was not simply something she did, it was who she was. She gave generously of her time, her energy and herself, always making sure the people around her were cared for.
She had a special gift for cooking and baking in the Italian tradition, carrying the flavours and customs of Sicily into her Canadian home. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and abundance, and her dinner table became a gathering place where love was shown in the simplest and most enduring ways.
When she was not caring for her family, Concettina enjoyed the friendship and community she found at her social club, where she shared laughter, conversation and many happy moments.
Concettina’s life was defined by devotion, strength and sacrifice. She worked tirelessly and gave so much of herself so that her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren could have opportunities she once could only have imagined.
Every sacrifice she made was rooted in love and in a vision for a better life for her family. The life her family is able to live today is, in so many ways, part of the dream she crossed an ocean to create.
Her legacy is found in the generations that came after her, in the strength she passed down, in the traditions she preserved, and in the countless ways her love shaped the lives around her. What she built will continue long beyond her lifetime.
After a lifetime spent caring for others and building a home for those she loved, we take comfort in knowing that Concettina has now gone home herself, welcomed into the arms of Jesus and into eternal peace with those gone before her.
We love you, and we will carry your strength, your sacrifices and your love with us always.
