Dr. Ching Po Tou, age 97, of Toronto, Canada passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025. Dr. Tou was a loving husband and father, devoted to his family and an academic career as a full professor of Electrical Engineering.
Although an extremely humble and modest man, Dr. Tou was an extraordinary person that led an exceptional life, admired by many and whose legacy continues to inspire the younger generation. He was born in Liaoning Province, China on March 6, 1928, the third child of six siblings. Growing up, he survived the Japanese invasion and occupation during World War II, followed by China’s civil war. With courage and determination, he pursued his studies despite these many adversities, securing one of only 100 spots nationwide to attend the Naval College of Technology where he earned a Navy ranking and a Bachelor of Science degree in radio communications. From there, he continued his academic career by earning a Master’s degree in 1959 from the National Jiao Tong University’s Institute of Electronics. He continued his pursuit of excellence by earning a PhD from Pennsylvania State University in Electrical Engineering. This was followed by a distinguished thirty years career as a professor of Electrical Engineering at Dalhousie University (formerly Technical University of Nova Scotia).
Dr. Ching Po Tou overcame unimaginable hardships. His perseverance and strong will enabled him to build a distinguished career and a happy family life with an amazing and beautiful wife, four successful children, and 5 grandchildren who look up to him and find inspiration and strength in his story. He was known to value learning over competitiveness, gratitude for the kindness of others, and a deep appreciation and selfless love for his family. He generously shared his knowledge, philosophies, and guidance for academic, family, and personal success. He continued seeking to learn new knowledge to his final days as his love for learning was only second to his love for his family.
Dr. Ching Po Tou is survived by his wife, Julie Tou and his four children, Grace Ting, Janet Tou, John Tou and Mary Tou-Merluzeau. He will also be deeply missed by extended family and friends.
Per his wishes, no visitation will be held at the funeral home and service will be private, attended by immediate family only.
