It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian John Evans on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, with his beloved wife Denise and cherished children Alexandra and Erik at his side. He was 69.
His illness came suddenly and moved with terrible speed. He was fit, healthy, and fully himself until a matter of weeks before his death.
Brian was born in Montreal, the son of John Bruce Evans and Phyllis Joyce Evans. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce at Concordia University in Montreal and, later, a Master of Business Administration at the Schulich School of Business at York University in Toronto.
He married Denise in Montreal in 1981, then moved to Toronto that same year, where they spent most of their forty-five years of marriage. He built a life defined by hard work, family, friendship, and an abiding love of the outdoors.
Brian built a distinguished career in banking and corporate finance, spending much of his professional life at Scotia Capital, where he oversaw national teams providing financing solutions to a portfolio of 250 Canadian companies and financed the construction of arenas and casinos across the continent. In the last chapter of his working life he turned that expertise toward something closer to his heart, serving for eleven years as General Manager of Kerry's Place Residential Services, which provides group homes for adults with autism. He approached his career with the same qualities that defined so much of his life: determination, discipline, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing.
In his final weeks he shook the hand of each of the doctors, nurses and technicians who cared for him and thanked them each by name, as though he were still closing a deal in a boardroom.
When he wasn't working, he was outside. He was an avid fisherman, skier, and a devoted cottager who served on the Kennisis Lake Cottage Owners’ Association, dedicating time to conservation and protecting the natural environment he loved so much. He coached youth soccer and hockey in North Toronto for years and in the GTHL. He and Denise were known for throwing a very good party, and one of the last things he asked of her was to throw one more for his friends and family.
Family was at the centre of Brian's life. He worked tirelessly to provide his family with the best he could. He was hardworking, generous and steadfast, always willing to do what was needed and always on the move. He had strong opinions and was not particularly interested in changing them. But beneath that determination was an enormous heart and a genuine desire to take care of the people he loved.
Brian is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Denise; his daughter Alexandra and her husband Geoff; his son Erik and his partner Dimitra; and his grandchildren Nora and Charlie, who were with him in his final days. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Constantina (Dina) Kefallinos, and his nieces Emilia (Matthew) Flautre, Zoë (Samuel) Flautre and Jill (Rodney) Bruce and his nephew Scott (Dana) Lewis of whom he was especially fond. He is survived as well by his sisters Susan (Bruce) Wade, Carol (Peter) Grimm, Donna (Keith) Robinson, and Beverly (Steven) Nicoletti, and by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Joyce, and by his sister Shirley (Rowley) Lewis.
The family wishes to thank the extraordinary teams at Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and in particular Team 11 at TGH, whose skill, patience and genuine kindness carried all of us through the hardest weeks of our lives.
A celebration of Brian's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, at The Miller Tavern, 3885 Yonge St., Toronto.
