Ashima Dey, was a kind and affectionate mother and grandmother, whose entire life was centered around her immense love for her family. Ashima was a very resilient person who experienced many large life transitions in early childhood and adulthood, yet she adapted to these changes with positivity, optimism, and grace.

Ashima was born in Dhupchanchia, in Bogura District of what is now Bangladesh. At a very early age, Ashima and her family experienced the full brunt of the 1947 Partition of British India. Her family became displaced and were forced to move to West Bengal, where they had to start life over again. Ashima's father, Jitendranath Chaudhuri wanted nothing but stability for his daughters. At the age of 16, Ashima was wed to Harihar Dey. This represented another major life change that Ashima adapted to succesfully. At the age of 19, she gave birth to her first daughter, Mitoo.

In those years, Ashima was treated to a good lifestyle in Kolkata and then later in Kumardhubi. As husband, Harihar sought to grow his career beyond the borders of India, Ashima was left behind temporarily to take care of daughter, Mitoo and now newborn son, Titoo. On June 18th, 1967, Ashima flew overseas with a small child and a newborn to join Harihar in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Moving to a different continent with a young family presented Ashima with a major challenge, but her resilience really shined as she adapted to speaking English and integrating her family into the North American lifestyle. There were few Bengali families in Windor, Ontario, so Ashima was forced to integrate into Canadian life. Here, in Windsor, Ashima gave birth to her third child, Anita.

Upon the family moving to Toronto, Ashima wove herself into the fabric of Toronto's Bengali community where she was well-loved.

Ashima took her work outside of the home very seriously. After being with Bell Canada for many years, Ashima retired at the age of 53.

Shortly after transitioning to an empty-nest lifestyle, Ashima welcomed her first grandson, Nolan. Ashima was a very dedicated grandmother during this time, making daily trips across the GTA to be with her grandson. Soon after that came grandaughter, Alisha who developed a tight bond with her Grandma. Joining in Ashima's fun, from England came grandson, Nathaniel, and then her last grandchild, Kobi.

Ashima craved making memories with her grand family. Ashima will be remembered by her children and grandchildren as a source of unconditional love, and she will be missed by all.
