In memory of

Zit Fee "Peter" Hum

February 15, 1938 -  January 13, 2017

Zit Fee (Peter) Hum, 78, passed away unexpectedly, January 13, 2017 at home with his family.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Wai (Rita) Hum, his sons Wilson and Perry Hum; his daughter Nancy Hum Chappell; his daughter in-law Lily Hum; his son in-law Tony Chappell; his granddaughter Emily Chappell; and many close family and friends.

Born in Canton, China in February 1938 to Yee and Yee May Hum, he immigrated to Canada when he was 14 years old. He spent his early years in Peterborough Ontario before he moved to Montreal Quebec to hone his skills as a chef. In his early twenties Peter settled in Toronto, Ontario and became a co-owner of King Wah Garden Chinese restaurant in the Sunnybrook Plaza. After selling the restaurant, Peter went to work at Toronto’s Delta Chelsea Inn for over 25 years and received the coveted “Employee of the Month” award and finally earned a well deserved retirement.

Peter loved his family immensely, giving them each his undivided attention. Peter and Rita were inseparable and did everything together. They both enjoyed taking trips near and far, going for long walks and hosted the big family gatherings. Not only did Peter love his wife, he had a soft spot for Nancy, ‘daddy’s little girl’, Lily and of course his precious granddaughter Emily. He was chivalrous and protected them and his chivalry extended out to other family members and friends. Peter welcomed Tony and Lily into the family unconditionally, ensuring they were not only included in all the family events, but if either of them were not able to attend, he would ensure that food was set aside to be brought home to them.

Aside from focusing on his family, Peter was also one of the original founding members and co-owner of the Hong Luck Kung Fu Club located in Toronto’s Chinatown. His passion for the martial arts was instilled into his sons, especially Perry. Together they spent many dedicated hours at the club and travelled to China for various Kung Fu demonstrations. Peter’s granddaughter Emily excels in mixed martial arts and made him proud with her many achievements in and out of the ring.

His other hobbies included fishing, playing mahjong with family and friends, and with his green thumb, tended to his vegetable garden, orchids and tropical plants.

Peter will be greatly missed, but memories of him will always be in our hearts.

The memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 9:00 am at the Elgin Mills Funeral Centre in remembrance of Zit Fee (Peter) Hum.

Entered January 17, 2017 from Toronto

I am very saddened with the lost of Mr. Hum. When I've first learned the news from Wilson, I have to look at his text message 2-3 times to fully understand what had just happened. Even as I type this message, I still cannot believe it.

Being a long time childhood friend with Wilson, Nancy and Perry, it was my honor to have known Mr. and Mrs. Hum for the last 40+ years. He was a great man, family man, humble man and most of all, he was a ‘ideal father figure’ to me as he always greeted and welcomed me into their homes.

I will truly miss his presence. I am also going to miss his homestyle bbq ribs !!
