In memory of

Zaiga Kalnins

May 31, 1939 -  December 25, 2024

Zaiga Kalnins (nee Zarins) died peacefully at the Rockcliffe Care Community. She leaves behind her son Arnis (Sandra), her daughter Zinta, and will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Eriks, Aleksia, Tayah and in particular Kiana who had lived with Zaiga for a few years. Zaiga was born in Riga, Latvia. Her family left the country to flee communism in 1944. They lived in various Displaced Persons camps in Germany until they immigrated to Canada a few years later. Zaiga and her family lived in Pembroke, Ontario where her father worked at Ontario Hydro. Zaiga attended Carleton University in Ottawa and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1964. She moved to St. Catharines in 1970 and later Toronto where she worked as a Medical technologist at Sunnybrook Medical Centre as well as other medical laboratories. More recently, she enjoyed spending lots of time with her grandchildren. Vieglas smiltis.

Good memories of our times in the past..

Valda zobens (friend)

Zaiga was a close friend from way back in Hanavs’s DP camp in Germany, visited her in Pembroke and later in Toronto. She was “Maid of Honour” at my wedding. I knew Zaiga as a happy person, with a good sense of humour and love of life.
Zaigiņ, rest in peace.

Shirley Ann Campbell (Lived in Hydro Colony as teenagers. ( in Rolphton))

Entered June 8, 2025 from Perth, Ontario

Mary Lou Faris, Zaiga and I were only teenage girls in the Colony. We were Girl Guides together. We rode the rough roads in a bus to Pembroke. ( 1 and 1/2 hours) for high school. This was an innocent time. We lost touch as years and distance and babies were happening. So sorry for your loss. I just celebrated my 65 year reunion from Ottawa Civic Hospital. Thinking of Zaiga with fondness. Sincerely Shirley.
