In Loving Memory of Yun Kiu Wong 蘇黃潤嬌夫人
June 8, 1929 – November 16, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Yun Kiu Wong 蘇黃潤嬌夫人. Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, at the remarkable age of 95. Her journey through life was one of strength, grace, and deep love for her family and community.
Yun Kiu lived a life that embodied resilience, love, and kindness. Born in 1929 in Hong Kong, she was the oldest sister to two younger brothers. She met and married So Man Chap and raised a family of four children together in a 200-square-foot flat in Wong Tai Sin. Yun Kiu worked tirelessly to support her family. She started as a seamstress, sewing garments and doll clothing before taking a position at the Hong Kong Association for the Blind in To Kwa Wan as a cleaner.
At home, Yun Kiu’s love for her family shone through the meals she prepared. Her loving and unmistakably loud voice echoed down the streets, a joyful summons that brought her children running home from their games outside, filling the air with warmth and connection. From her famous stuffed peppers with fish paste, she turned simple ingredients into feasts of love. She treasured gathering her family together, transforming her small flat into a lively hub for hot pot, sharing warmth, laughter, and her culinary creations. Her home was the heart of the family—a sanctuary filled with laughter, the aroma of her extraordinary cooking, and countless treasured memories.
Moving to Canada in 1994, Yun Kiu remained deeply rooted in her values of family, culture, and community. Every Chinese festival, she would pass out her delicious baked goods from leen goh to turnip cakes for all her children and grandchildren. Whether she was preparing a feast for her loved ones, sharing wise advice over tea, or simply offering a warm smile, Yun Kiu had a way of making everyone feel seen and cherished.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: shuffling tiles from a game of Mahjong, sharing baskets of dim sum, or the harvest from her vegetable garden. Yun Kiu taught us how to be present each day, delight in a meal together, and that "sik wu 食和" never matters more than the people she played with.
Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled, the meals she lovingly prepared, and the memories she created with her family. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A celebration of Yun Kiu’s life will take place on November 23, 2024, at Elgin Mills Cemetery, Cremation & Funeral Centres. Family and friends are invited to honor her memory and share stories of her remarkable journey.
Yun Kiu Wong 蘇黃潤嬌夫人 will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who loved her.
