With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Sam Yin Sum Ho.
Never one to seek attention or recognition, Yin Sum was a man guided by purpose, responsibility, and practicality. Above all else, he devoted his life to his family. “Work hard” was not simply advice he gave, but the principle by which he lived.
Born in Guangzhou, China, Yin Sum grew up during a time of great hardship and uncertainty. Alongside his seven younger siblings, he was raised in modest circumstances when even life’s basic comforts were considered luxuries. He made the difficult decision to leave home and immigrated alone to Hong Kong at just 15 years old.
Arriving with little more than a few dollars and the strong work ethic instilled in him by his parents, Yin Sum worked tirelessly to build a better future for himself and to support his family. Beginning in a department store, he eventually earned an apprenticeship and owned a business in tool and die work, leading to a career as a mould maker for over 40 years.
Discipline and diligence were a common thread throughout his life, even in finding joy with do-it-yourself projects, tinkering in the garage, practising Tai Chi, and keeping up with current affairs. He was never one to shy from a challenge, befriend a stranger, or offer a helping hand.
His quiet strength, sacrifices, and unwavering devotion to his family will remain with us always.
