In Loving Memory of Yin Ching Eng

Yin Ching Eng - Passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Thursday March 16, 2023 at Michael Garron Hospital at 93 years of age - although her immigration papers indicate she was younger.

She was a caring, kind and gentle soul. The beloved wife to her late husband Douglas and loving and devoted mother to seven children, Yin (Mike), Raymond (Shirley), Pauline (Sidney), Annie (Kam), Helen (Ken), May (Stephen) and Judy (Danny). She was the proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren Joseph (Kimberley), Christian (Amber), Sarah (Kurtis), David, Kevin, Nathan, Jordan, Laura, Keaton, Zachary and Emma and doting great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren Jude, Victoria, Joy, Joel and James.

Yin Ching was the youngest of three siblings. She was born in Guangdong, China in the county of Toisan, on September 24,1929. During her life, Yin Ching lived in the village of Makhum and moved to the village of Sanchong in the same county where she met and married Douglas Eng in an arranged marriage in 1951. Yin Ching gave birth to her first daughter Yin in 1952. Her husband Douglas immigrated to Canada first to provide a home for his family. Yin Ching and their six-year-old daughter made the voyage to Canada to reunite with Douglas in March 1958. Upon arrival in Toronto, Yin Ching worked as a seamstress sewing aprons. She later found a job as a cook at the Flower Drum Restaurant and became a fantastic cook. Her love language was cooking and sharing foods she made with loved ones. Her specialties included making hargow, hem gok, and sticky rice dumplings, and many other delicious dishes for every family gathering. She never hesitated to teach family and friends how to prepare her special dishes. Following her husband’s death in 1984, Yin Ching was a single mother of seven children – all but one was still in school. Yin Ching worked long hours at the restaurant to support her family and ensured all meal preps were completed for her children before she left to work at the restaurant daily from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Upon retirement, Yin Ching’s world opened up to enjoying time with family - especially on cruises, travelling the globe, learning English to communicate better with her grandchildren, walking daily with her neighbours to the park, learning to line dance, eating buffets and playing the slots at the casino with friends. Yin Ching was a Woman of God who had great faith! She loved God with all of her heart and never failed to give thanks to God for everything. Her favourite song was Jesus Loves Me which she often sung. She even taught the song to Sophy, her Personal Support Worker, to sing it with her everyday. Yin Ching knew God was watching over her family and she faithfully prayed everyday of her life for each of her children by name. She served as a long-time member of the Chinese Presbyterian Church and lived an incredible life! The family is comforted knowing that Yin Ching is a born-again Christian and she has reunited with her husband and their eldest daughter Yin in heaven. May they rest in peace together.

The family want to thank the staff at Heritage Nursing Home for their wonderful care and compassion they provided for their mom who suffered from dementia and congestive heart failure in her later years.
